Josh Slocum and Lisa Carlson are the two most prominent advocates of consumer rights in dealing with the death industry. Here they combine efforts to inform consumers of their rights and propose long-needed reforms. Slocum is executive director of Funeral Consumers Alliance, a national nonprofit with over 90 local affiliates nationwide. Carlson is executive director of Funeral Ethics Organization, which works with the industry to try to improve ethical standards. Contains 15 bound volumes of funeral records kept by Nelson's Funeral Home, Las Cruces, NM, 1935-1965. Volumes 1-10 and 12-15 are arranged in chronological order, with an alphabetical surname index in the front. Volume 11 is indexed and arranged by last name, not in chronological order. Each record contains information such as: age, residence, occupation, date of funeral, place and cause of death, name of individual who ordered funeral services, name of individual who paid for services and a ledger of payments made. Other death record information is also noted. Some record entries have a newspaper death notice or obituary pasted in. Other records include a copy of the official death certificate.

This book is a compilation of obituaries and death notices transcribed from issues of the Crittenden Record-Press dating from 03 January 1918 through 29 August 1918 and issues of The Crittenden Press dating from 07 August 1919 through 22 December 1922. An Addendum is located at the end of this volume and includes issues of The Crittenden Record dating from 15 July 1904 through 08 February 1907 which were made available after Volume II and Volume III were published.

The records contain the burial and death information of Cleveland-area residents whose services were conducted by the Emil C. Haag Funeral Home and Chapel, and later by the Davis Home for Funerals, of Berea, Cuyahoga County between 1937 and 1949. Most entries include the original obituary clipping glued into the ledger; obituaries would have ran in either the Plain Dealer, the Cleveland Press, or the Cleveland News, the three major newspapers in the county at the time. A typical entry includes cause of death; date of death; birthplace and date; parents; internment; attending physician; occupation; and social state. Not all entries are completely filled in.
