Author's abstract: A mental block is a phenomenon in which an athlete's mind no longer allows them to perform a physical skill that was previously well-learned and automatic. This phenomenon has received attention in gymnastics and trampoline but the literature is lacking an investigation of this phenomenon in all-star cheerleading. The purpose of this study was to examine the phenomenon of mental blocks by obtaining it from the first-person perspective of cheerleaders themselves. A purposeful sample of 8 all-star cheerleader participants was interviewed and transcriptions were analyzed utilizing qualitative analysis. Four main themes were found: 1) specific to backwards moving skills, 2) mind and body dichotomy, 3) fear of performing the blocked skill, 4) pressure and negative self-belief. From these themes, research may be conducted to determine the cause of mental blocks as well as ways to help cheerleaders overcome them.

Similar to the impetus birthing Black Lives Matter, this handbook is born from the grief and pain of witnessing the modern-day lynching and injustices of fellow brothers and sisters at the hands of police and neighborhood vigilantes. The reality of watching a cop place his knee on the neck of George Floyd for 8 minutes and 46 seconds as the world watched him beg for his life, exclaiming he could not breathe while calling for his late mother, has compelled individuals to move, to act, to speak up, and to use their voices for the voiceless. With this new calling to speak truth to power, one may not know exactly how, when, where, or with whom to engage to develop their identities and to make critical changes happen. This can lead to a feeling of despair or directionlessness, with so much passion and fire and no idea where to fuel, recharge, or elevate one's calling. This handbook is for you. The Activism Growth Model(TM) and Black Athlete Activist Leadership Model(TM) presented here are based on the narratives of multiple studies capturing the lived experiences of activists from campuses and communities, and centered in Critical Race Theory, Black Feminist Thought, and Community Cultural Wealth. These models were created as frameworks of guidance for activists and their supporters as they navigate their campus and communities and build upon their advocacy and activism. So, take a knee. March for all Black lives. Utilize your voice. Recognize and leverage your privilege to speak truth to power, and let love be at the root of your resistance. May this handbook be a roadmap for your calling to engage and be empowered.

A MEDITATION ON IDENTITY, CULTURE, AND HEALING IN CHILDREN SEPARATED FROM ORIGINAL FAMILY. Millions of our world¿s children are forced through the curtain of separation from original family. Among the numerous causes are poverty, abuse, neglect, natural disaster, epidemic, immigration, incarceration, addiction, war, genocide, oppression, and child labor. While each experience is its own, all such separations cleave the child heart and mind into a common root wound of vacancy and drift. In the face of such woundedness, our children have the power for healing and growth waiting within them. Every aspect of their lives is affected by an often solitary quest for beauty and belonging. We who raise and serve these displaced young, through our embrace, are a vital factor in their ultimate healing. Jaiya John has shared time with thousands of uprooted children through his human relations work. Reflection Pond offers us his personal meditation, a looking glass for what these youth have whispered into his spirit. They have shared their need for reflection ponds: people, places, and experiences through which their own beauty and purpose are reflected back to them. Through allegory and parable, poetry and prose, Jaiya John draws from the natural world around us to unveil the magical inner life of children and youth. Here is a revelatory positioning of the human mirror. In its face we glimpse magnificence.
