A numerical method is presented for the stress analysis of stiffened-shell structures of arbitrary cross section under nonuniform temperature distributions. The method is based on a previously published procedure that is extended to include temperature effects and multicell construction. The applicationof the method to practical problems is discussed and an illustrative analysis is presented of a two-cell box beam under the combined action of vertical loads and nonuniform temperature distribution.

Thermal Stress Analyses deals with both elastic and plastic thermal stresses produced from large variations in temperature and thermal expansion in materials whose properties are time-independent. This book is composed of eight chapters. The opening chapter illustrates the general three-dimensional thermoelastic problem, which requires the determination of stress, strains and displacements, when the body forces and boundary conditions are known while the next chapter demonstrate a simpler, two-dimensional formulation involving plane strain and plane stress. The succeeding five chapters describe thermal stresses in various structures, including in thin plates, beams, circular cylinders, and shells. The closing chapters consider the mechanism of thermal buckling and sundry design problems. This book is of value to mechanical engineers, and to mechanical engineering teachers and students.

Wear and sliding friction properties of a number of nickel alloys operating against hardened SAE 52100 steel were studied. The alloys were cast beryllium nickel, heat-treated beryllium nickel, cast Inconel, Nimonic 80, Inconel X, Refractalloy 26, and Discaloy. Some of the allows studied may be useful as material for cages of rolling-contact bearings that operate at high speeds with temperatures above 600 degrees F in projected aircraft turbine engines or for bearings that operate in corrosive mediums. Desirable operating properties and the absence of extreme mass welding of all the materials could be associated with the development of the sliding surfaces of a naturally formed film of nickel oxide. On the basis of wear and friction properties, cast Inconel performed very well in these experiments and compares favorably with nodular iron. Nimonic 80 also showed promise as a possible cage material.
