The continuous development of experimental techniques has enabled the attainment of laboratory pressures comparable with those existing in the centre of the Earth or of Jupiter. The increasing international interest in this research field stems not only from the information acquired at geophysical and astrophysical levels but also from the possibility to obtain new materials, some of which are currently being used in manufacturing industries. Also for its fundamental implications, much research work has been devoted to molecular solids under pressure.
