A New Hymnal for Colleges and Schools is a nondenominational, ecumenical collection of over 400 hymns and 100 psalms designed especially for worship services in academic communities. Hymns and spiritual songs are drawn from many countries and many different traditions. A number of hymns appear in their original languages, as well as in English translations. Throughout the hymnal, gender-inclusive language is used wherever possible. The psalms, for example, depend heavily on inclusive-language versions prepared by the United Methodist Church and the National Council of Churches. Also included are many hymns written in the past quarter-century, as well as new texts and music commissioned especially for this collection. The ample selection of hymns by Americans includes the work of hymn writers, composers, and authors such as Aaron Copland, Emma Lou Diemer, Alice Parker, Virgil Thomson, Richard Proulx, Robert Frost, and John Updike.

Excerpt from Hymns for Schools and Colleges The everyday needs of school and college congregations have prompted the making of this hymn book and have determined its character, arrange ment, and size. The editors have searched critically through many modern hymnals for those hymns that can be sung with sincerity and heartiness by young men of to - day. They have sought for tunes having not only musical merit but also moderate range, easy intervals, and simple movement. Many tunes kave 56m transposed to lower keys. The melody rarely rises above Eb. Unison singing is thus made easier and will be found desirable for general use. The bass, however, has been kept, wherever possible, above lower F. About eighty of the selections, with their accepted tune settings, are al ready widely familiar as standard hymns of the church. With many other hymns, various settings are in use. Wherever it has been necessary for the editors to choose a tune setting, they have carefully considered precedent, effectiveness for the whole hymn, and musical accents. In many instances a second tune is printed or referred to, and, in other cases, the page arrange ment affords a choice. Tunes used more than once have, as a rule, been set with kindred hymns. All of the tunes have been taken from standard modern books and fully two thirds of them are well known. The editors have aimed for variety in words and music and for a proper proportion between the old and the new. The general grouping of the hymns has been suggested by experience. Within the larger groups a logical arrangement will be found. The best versions of both hymns and tunes have been sought by comparison of recent books. In many instances stanzas have been omitted. The editors have not made independent researches regarding versions or authorship. For dates they have relied mostly upon the indexes of the new edition of The Pilgrim Hymnal. Excerpt from Laudamus: A Hymnal for Women's Colleges and Schools Hymnals, as a rule, are much too voluminous. Pastors are troubled with the superfluous number of hymns from which they are obliged to make selections for their Sunday services. Much more is this true of those who conduct the daily religious exercises of colleges and schools. What such persons want is a collection of hymns from which a choice may be made almost at random, without fear of falling upon inappropriateness or violations of good taste. Such a collection must be small. The approximately perfect, or even thoroughly good hymns - good in form as well as spirit - are few; and these in the ordinary hymnal are obscured, if not lost, in a mass of compositions little better than mere rubbish. It is desirable also that a college hymnal, while not neglecting doctrinal themes, should be especially full in the expression of the daily needs and experiences incident to school life. These considerations imply a great reduction in the size of the college hymnal, and they also suggest the points at which this reduction should be made. As our institutions of learning are for the most part unsectarian, and do not assume the functions of a church, the work of abbreviation is facilitated by the obvious propriety of throwing out all hymns Specifically related to church ordinances. It is not quite fair that an undenominational school should use a service of song prepared in the interest of any particular sect. In View of these facts it is believed that there is not simply room for a collection like this, but that it is really needed. In performing his work the compiler's aim has been to admit only such hymns as approve themselves to a fair critical judgment, while they cultivate the Spirit of devotion. If any of inferior merit have been retained, it is because of the lack of better compositions to take their place, or as a concession to the just claims of old and tender associations. In so brief a collection it has been assumed that other than quite general classifications of subjects and descriptive headlines would be a hindrance rather than a help.
