Not illustrated. 1842 edition. Excerpt: ... could not by possibility be excluded from entering upon mercantile affairs. The history of the trade of the nation, therefore, when in the reigns of Richard the Second and Henry the Fourth it became increased to a large extent, will afford us a fair insight into the condition of the town. One of the earliest monasteries established in Ipswich was that of Trinity or Christ church. It was situated near the site of the present St. Margaret's church, and dates its origin previously to the year 1177. The establishment was that of a community of Augustine canons, "founded or chiefly endowed by Norman Gastrode fil. Eadnothe, Ernoldus, and Fulco, canons here, and Simon fil. Osberni." The monks appear to have been driven from their convent by a conflagration, hut they were reinstated in their possessions by John de Oxford, bishop of Norwich, previously to the year 1200. The community was not large, as at the dissolution of monasteries the convent was found to accommodate only a prior and six or seven canons. The value of the possessions appear according to Tax. Eccle. 1291, 47. 17s. 4jd.--according to Valor Ecclesiasticus, 1534, the clear value of 88. 6s. 9d.--by Liber Val, the gross value of 119. 16s. 2d. These sums were derived from the advowsons, and portions of the churches of St. Lawrence, St. Mary at Tower, St. Mary at Elms, St. Savoir, St. John Baptist, St. Margaret, Trinity, and St. Michael in the borough of Ipswich. In other parts of the county, the c convent possessed property at Tudenham, Momingthorpe, Mendham, Rushmere, Foxhall, Bentley, Higham, Willisham, and Preston. It also owned a water course, and a mill in Hagonford--pasturage for four hundred sheep, free warren in eleven parishes, and rents in many other...

Visit the earliest history of the US with the settlers and industries that were built in Ipswich, Massachusetts and the local charm that persists today. Founded in 1634, Ipswich is one of the oldest towns in America. It currently has more First Period houses still lived in than any other community in the United States. It was originally the home of Colonial governors, renowned furniture makers, sea captains, and the Heard family, who were giants in the China trade. Added to the early settlers were immigrant millworkers and millionaires who built summer mansions. As nearby towns with broader rivers and deeper harbors became commercial successes, Ipswich went into decline. It was this "hibernation" that enabled Ipswich to maintain its earliest homes, spectacular scenery, and local charm. Through more than two hundred vintage images, Ipswich takes the reader on an exciting journey through the history of this unique town. It presents the town's creative artists, the lives and occupations of its everyday citizens, beautiful landscapes, the mills and the country stores, and the ships and shipwrecks that met the Ipswich coast.
