Although the institution of monasticism has existed in the Christian church since the first century, it is often misunderstood. Greg Peters, an expert in monastic studies, reintroduces historic monasticism to the Protestant church, articulating a monastic spirituality for all believers. As Peters explains, what we have known as monasticism for the past 1,500 years is actually a modified version of the earliest monastic life, which was not necessarily characterized by poverty, chastity, and obedience but rather by one's single-minded focus on God--a single-mindedness rooted in one's baptismal vows and the priesthood of all believers. Among the numerous sets of conferences that Thomas Merton presented during his decade (1955–1965) as novice master at the Cistercian Abbey of Gethsemani are the two courses included in the present volume, a thorough examination of the book of Genesis that began in mid-1956 and concluded on the Feast of Pentecost, 1957, and a considerably less detailed series of classes on the book of Exodus from 1957–1958. These texts, made available here for the first time in a critical edition accompanied by a comprehensive introduction and extensive annotation, comprise the only major surviving teaching notes on particular books of Scripture dating from the years when Merton was in charge of the novitiate and provide direct access to his views on the intellectual, and particularly the spiritual, contexts in which they should be read, understood, and appreciated. As biblical scholar Pauline Viviano writes in her preface, “This edition of Thomas Merton’s class notes brings us into the workings of a great spiritual leader’s mind as he reflects upon Scripture. . . . His audience consists of the novices at the Abbey of Gethsemani, but all who are on a spiritual journey can gain from his insights and the lessons he draws.”

The Codex Amiatinus and its “Sister” Bibles examines the full Bibles (Bibles containing every scriptural text that producers deemed canonical) made at the northern English monastery of Wearmouth–Jarrow under Abbot Ceolfrith (d. 716) and the Venerable Bede (d. 735), and the religious, cultural, and intellectual circumstances of their production. The key manuscript witness of this monastery’s Bible-making enterprise is the Codex Amiatinus, a massive illustrated volume sent toward Rome in June 716, as a gift to St. Peter. Amiatinus is the oldest extant, largely intact Latin full Bible. Its survival is the critical reason that Ceolfrith’s Wearmouth–Jarrow has long been recognized as a pivotal center in the evolution of the design, structure, and contents of medieval biblical codices.
