"A Mental Revolution includes eight original essays that analyze how the scientific management principles developed by legendary engineer Frederick W. Taylor have evolved and been applied since his death in 1915." "Taylor believed that a business or any other complex organization would operate more effectively if its practices were subjected to rigorous scientific study. His classic Principles of Scientific Management spread his ideas for organization, planning, and employee motivation throughout the industrialized world. But scientific management, because it required, in Taylor's words, "a complete mental revolution," was highly disruptive, and Taylor's famous time-motion studies, especially when applied piecemeal by many employers who did not adopt the entire system, helped make the movement enormously unpopular with the organized labor movement. Though its direct influence diminished by the 1930s, Taylorism has remained a force in American business and industry up to the present time." "The essays in this volume discuss some of the important people and organizations involved with Taylorism throughout this century, including Richard Feiss and Mary Barnett Gilson at Joseph & Feiss, Frank and Lillian Gilbreth, and Mary Van Kleeck, and explore the influence of scientific management at the Bedaux Company, the Link-Belt Company, and Du Pont. Chapters on the Taylor movement's influence on university business education and on Peter Drucker's theories round out the collection." "Written by some of the finest scholars of the scientific management movement, A Mental Revolution provides a balanced and comprehensive view of its principles, evolution, and influence on business, labor, management, and education."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Doubts about the reality of mental illness and the benefits of psychiatric treatment helped foment a revolution in the law's attitude toward mental disorders over the last 25 years. Legal reformers pushed for laws to make it more difficult to hospitalize and treat people with mental illness, and easier to punish them when they committed criminal acts. Advocates of reform promised vast changes in how our society deals with the mentally ill; opponents warily predicted chaos and mass suffering. Now, with the tide of reform ebbing, Paul Appelbaum examines what these changes have wrought. The message emerging from his careful review is a surprising one: less has changed than almost anyone predicted. When the law gets in the way of commonsense beliefs about the need to treat serious mental illness, it is often put aside. Judges, lawyers, mental health professionals, family members, and the general public collaborate in fashioning an extra-legal process to accomplish what they think is fair for persons with mental illness. Appelbaum demonstrates this thesis in analyses of four of the most important reforms in mental health law over the past two decades: involuntary hospitalization, liability of professionals for violent acts committed by their patients, the right to refuse treatment, and the insanity defense. This timely and important work will inform and enlighten the debate about mental health law and its implications and consequences. The book will be essential for psychiatrists and other mental health professionals, lawyers, and all those concerned with our policies toward people with mental illness.

Childhood, even though it is difficult, is actually the best period of a person. A person realizes the value of his childhood in later years, when he comes under the burden of life. However, I couldn't stay a child, I had to face the pain and difficulties of life. As I got older, my fear of the future increased and the people around me decreased. As I saw the bitter side of life and people's relationships based solely on materiality, I began to deeply question why people live and what they aim for in life. Did people live to love or to dominate each other? When I saw that there was all kinds of material competition between people, I began to think that people had put their love for humanity aside. Like every child, when I was young, that is, young enough to be considered a child I was not very emotional. However, as I got older, as I took part in life, as life took away more and more from me, I became more emotional; and the human factor began to become more important to me.

Philosophy of Technology: An introduction for technology and business students is an accessible guide to technology’s changes , their ubiquitousness, and the many questions these raise. Designed for those with no philosophical background in mind, it is ideal for technology and engineering students or specialists who want to learn to think critically about how their work influences society and our daily lives. The technological, business environment and daily experiences are the starting point of the book and the authors’ reflect upon these practices from a philosophical point of view. The text goes on to present a critical analysis of the subject including development, manufacturing, sales and marketing and the use of technological products and services. The abstract ideas are made easier to grasp with a story-telling approach: a vivid history of the discipline and colourful portraits of the core thinkers in this domain, as well as four case studies drawing from various engineering disciplines to demonstrate how philosophy can and should influence technology in practice. The first comprehensive introduction to this vibrant young sub-discipline in over 20 years, this is an ideal textbook for students of technology and engineering beginning a course or project in the philosophy of their subject.

Marion & Gonzales offer well-balanced, well-researched, and lively discussions of classic and contemporary leadership theories and their applications. They lay out the organizational theory, provide an application, and then address leadership issues. The authors begin with a brief look at the pros and cons of general entity-based approaches to leadership, reflecting key debates in the leadership literature. Next, readers encounter the history and applications of relational notions of leadership that suggest being a leader is more about process and practice than a singular person. The book finishes with coverage of more emergent and critical takes on leadership. Real-world examples from inside and outside educational contexts; case studies, roundtable discussions, group activities; and reflective exercises engage readers and accelerate learning.
