Excerpt from A Memoir of Thomas Chard, D.D., Suffragan Bishop, and the Last Abbot of Ford Abbey, Dorsetshire; Late in the County of Devon The following memoir was communicated to the Congress of the British Archaeological Association at their meeting at Exeter in August 1861, when, with the omission of certain portions, it was read to the meeting, and was subsequently printed, with the same omissions, in the Journal of the Association for the following year; the chief part of what was thus omitted being that which related to Ford Abbey. A paper exclusively devoted to a description of the Abbey having been furnished to the meeting at the same time by one much better qualified than myself for the undertaking, it was deemed advisable, with the view, moreover, of avoid ing anything like repetition, to omit from the Memoir of the Last Abbot those parts which were in any way descriptive of the Abbey; an arrangement which, however udicious in itself, and considerate towards the members of the Associa tion, had the effect, as 'it appeared to me, of depriving my paper of some of its chief features of interest.
