Abstract: "This paper investigates the possibilit[i]es of supporting user interface design and evaluation by means of a knowledge-based critiquing approach. We describe a prototype system called KRI that was developed in order to investigate the feasibility of a critiquing approach and to point to potential problems. The rest of the paper is concerned with a possible way of integrating a knowledge-based critiquing module with a conventional User Interface Management System (UIMS). We recognize the need for support as well in the design phase as in evaluating the runtime log, and discuss requirements on the user interface representation of the UIMS when a design and evaluation support module is considered, and finally evaluate a particular representation language (the User Interface Language of Digital's XUI Toolkit) from this point of view."

The results were encouraging and also demonstrated that the level of user interface representation is crucial for the quality of the evaluation. I propose an architecture where this kind of knowledge-based support is integrated with a UIMS and argue that the requirements on a high-level user interface representation can be relaxed if the system also analyses data from empirical tests of the user interface prototype."

The past decade has seen the growth and diffusion of information technology exceeding most predictions, even those of many optimistic researchers. At the same time, there has also been a substantial increase in concern for the human aspects of computing and information technology systems. Brought together in this book are 150 papers presenting, discussing and surveying recent research into Human-Computer Interaction. Included are a number of case studies describing a wide range of applications and projects.
