Excerpt from A History of Transportation in the Eastern Cotton Belt: To 1860 American history is largely the record of the adjustment of a migrating people to their new environment and the modification of the environment to subserve the greater welfare and comfort of the people. Popular self-government has been a means of facilitating that adjustment; and the work of parties and statesmen has been in large part to readjust the people to the environment and the several groups of the people to one another. Captains of industry and captains of transportation rank in substantial importance near the political leaders of similar merit and service; and the promotive campaigns for "internal improvements" bear as much significance in the general development of the nation as do many of the campaigns of president-making. Transportation facilities and traffic play a very large part in the life of any modern people, and the study of this theme of development, along with many others, is an essential for thorough historical knowledge and understanding. To me the ante-bellum South is the most interesting theme in the history of this continent. I seek to understand the history of the South, and hope to explain it. The economic and social aspects seem to offer the best line of approach to the general problem, and hence my attention to the present subject along with others parallel, such as the plantation system. During Reconstruction, an alliance of southern planters and northern capitalists rebuilt the southern railway system using remnants of the Confederate railroads that had been built and destroyed during the Civil War. In the process of linking Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia by rail, this alliance created one of the largest corporations in the world, engendered bitter political struggles, and transformed the South in lasting ways, says Scott Nelson. Iron Confederacies uses the history of southern railways to explore linkages among the themes of states' rights, racial violence, labor strife, and big business in the nineteenth-century South. By 1868, Ku Klux Klan leaders had begun mobilizing white resentment against rapid economic change by asserting that railroad consolidation led to political corruption and black economic success. As Nelson notes, some of the Klan's most violent activity was concentrated along the Richmond-Atlanta rail corridor. But conflicts over railroads were eventually resolved, he argues, in agreements between northern railroad barons and Klan leaders that allowed white terrorism against black voters while surrendering states' control over the southern economy.
