Deposits Of marl and phosphate were being put to commercial use. The seed of the cotton which had been held to be without value was beginning to be crushed in mills where the oil was ex pressed from it and the fibre was converted into guano. Tim ber was being felled and sawed into lumber. Quarries were yielding valuable marble and granite. Commercial convem tions assembled in several cities of the South to discuss the advancement of trade. Everywhere there were agricultural fairs for the competitive display of farm products. A grow ing interest was manifested in the improvement of the soil. In 1870 Georgia expended for commercial ma nures, one fifth as much, so it was said, as was being laid out in a year for the fertilization Of the land in Great Britain.
