Not illustrated. 18 edition. Excerpt: ...wishing to revive the famous quarrel which Pius IX. ended by authority with his Encyclical, Inter Multiplices, dated March 21st, 1853, one cannot forbear acknowledging that very little was done in this order for the opinions dear to Don Bosco; and in that little, perseverance had failed. True, reform was as difficult as desirable. Freedom of instruction does not exist in our country of so-O1illed liberty; everywhere except in England and rea-'gium the State, like a jealous dragon, watches e roacjs of study. This book traces its subject from the death of Aurunzib to the so-called Indian Mutiny. The history of India since 1498 is of a tremendous confrontation of cultures and religions. Since 1757, the chief part in this confrontation has been played by Britain; and the Christian missionary enterprise has had a very important role.
