With craft beer being all the rage I put together a chronological history of brewers that have been in Portsmouth, Ohio from the early 19th century to today. It is a micro-view of how important beer making has been not only to Portsmouth but to our country as well. It covers the Germanic beginnings, the temperance movements of the 1870's, the industrious developments of entrepreneurs in the 1890's, the loss of a patriarch and his son's operations right up until Prohibition had stopped his lively-hood. It then goes to cover what the brewery was used for from its closing right up until the end of the 20th century where two brothers, with a dream, resurrected the brewery again. It is a history of a brewery's influence in and on a society; on how important they can be to the long-term a development of society. A History of Brewers in Portsmouth, Ohio with an Emphasis on the Portsmouth Brewing Company Part One: The 19th Century is a chronological look at the early development of producing beer in Portsmouth, Ohio, a community located at the confluence of the Ohio and Scioto Rivers by enterprising German immigrants. The book covers the period from its early days in the 1840s through a volatile temperance movement in the 1870s right up to the demise of the man who had instilled the Portsmouth Brewing Company into the history of Ohio.

In 1948, Thomas Childs Cochran, Professor of History at New York University, completed what is perhaps the most in-depth historical study of an American brewery ever undertaken. The result was The Pabst Brewing Company: The History of an American Business. To make this valuable work available to contemporary historians and beer enthusiasts, BeerBooks.com has reprinted Cochran''s book from a 1948 first edition. A History of Brewers in Portsmouth, Ohio, with an Emphasis on the Portsmouth Brewing Company: Part IIthe 20th & 21st Centuries is a continuation of A History of Brewers in Portsmouth, Ohio, with an Emphasis on the Portsmouth Brewing Company: Part One: The 19th Century, also available through Xlibris Publishing. The second book picks up where part one left off, moving on from the demise of brewery patriarch Julius Esselborn to his sonsPaul Esselbornturbulent tenure as general manager of the Portsmouth Brewery, as well as his contributions to Portsmouth as a community leader. From there, the book recounts the many uses of the brewerybottler to car dealership to arcadebrought on by the Prohibition and post-Prohibition era before returning back to its original roots as a craft brewery by two local brothers, Steven and Ira Mault. These two books are a look back into the history of Portsmouth, Ohio, my hometown, from the viewpoint of beer brewing, a major part of this community from its very early days to its present and, hopefully, well into its future. Narragansett Brewing Company was developed in 1890 by German American descendants in Cranston. Taking advantage of an underground aquifer, the company also made ice for thousands of customers. During Prohibition, the brewery continued to make and deliver ice, as well as a type of soda. After the repeal of Prohibition, the Haffenreffer family purchased the brewery and began recalling previous workers to help restore the brewery and bring it to the highest production rate ever. After World War II, advertising manager Jack Haley shifted the company focus to hospitality with the now famous slogan, Hi Neighbor, Have a Gansett! Before long, Narragansett was the number one beer in New England.
