Compiled by the Tokelau Wellington Leadership Group, supported by the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs, Alagakupu Tokelau is a collection of proverbs intended to ignite interest, conversations and new initiatives about the maintenance of the Tokelau language. Alagakupu Tokelau captures over 200 proverbs written in the Tokelau language. Each proverb is accompanied by an explanation and meaning offered by the contributor. The menu of proverbs ranges from humorous, common sayings that serve as a record of a particular arresting event to chants for specific settings, age-old axioms and sage advice of unknown origin, some with links to Tokelau folklore. In its current form, Alagakupu Tokelau is perhaps more useful to a speaker of the Tokelau language who is searching for a wider or deeper understanding of the language or one who is looking to enrich his/her treasure chest which these offerings of timeless Tokelau jewels. This is an ongoing effort to revive and ensure the survival of Te Gagana Tokelau. The Tokelau Wellington Leadership Group hopes that future publications will include the English translations to expand its target audience.

Tokelau: A Historical Ethnography is the outcome of more than two decades of intensive and wide-ranging research in and about the three tiny Polynesian atolls known as Tokelau. The book is both a comparative ethnographic study of the islands of Tokelau and a narrative record of their past. The ethnographic study is set in the years around 1970, and local narratives and records complement foreign documents to tell the separate and combined stories of the atolls traditional, contact, and colonial pasts. Throughout, the differences and interrelationships between the three places are highlighted.

Tuvaluan is a Polynesian language spoken by the 9,000 inhabitants of the nine atolls of Tuvalu in the Central Pacific, as well as small and growing Tuvaluan communities in Fiji, New Zealand, and Australia. This grammar is the first detailed description of the structure of Tuvaluan, one of the least well-documented languages of Polynesia. Tuvaluan pays particular attention to discourse and sociolinguistics factors at play in the structural organization of the language.

Between 1965 and 1975, a large proportion of the population of Tokelau, a group of three tiny isolated atolls in the tropical South Pacific, migrated to New Zealand, where they became part of a cosmopolitan urban society. By 1985, two-thirds of all Tokelauans lived in New Zealand. This book traces the experience of the Tokelauans, both migrant and non-migrant, during the period 1965-85. The analysis is interdisciplinary, drawing upon historical, ethnographic, sociological, and epidemiological materials. Topics discussed include the ecology and history of Tokelau, the nature of Tokelauan culture and society, the problems of adaptation faced by migrants to New Zealand and their efforts to develop a viable Tokelauan community there, the impact of modernizing influences upon atoll society, changes in the health status of both migrant and non-migrant Tokelauans, and the relationship of social change to the health of the population. Special attention is paid to the hypothesis that the migrants' adaptation to modern urban society would lead to increased incidence of such chronic conditions as hypertension, coronary heart disease, asthma, and diabetes. The work serves as a valuable and in many ways unique source of information for public health professionals, medical anthropologists, sociologists and specialists in development policy.
