In the UK there are some 1.5 million hectars of low-lying land, much of which has the potential to be wet grassland. Most has been drained and improved for agriculture - only 109,500 hectares support breeding waders. There are 32 RDB/candidate RDB species of birds which depend or partly depend on lowland wet grassland.
