Learn the basic principles of modular design, and then put them into action to create sites that are easy to use, look great, and can be adapted within the context of your business needs. With author James Cabrera—one of the thought leaders in the modular-design movement—you'll create a single, scalable project for a sample nameplate site and then adapt that same project to work successfully as a portfolio site, an e-commerce site, and finally as a news/publishing content site. Along the way, you'll learn the scientific approach to devising a sound and scalable design strategy, followed by establishing a basic foundation using various criteria relevant to that type of site. As each chapter progresses, you'll add new concepts appropriate for the project type. Modular web and app design isn't just for so-called "creatives." It's a teachable science with principles that can be replicated in a creative manner. This approach makes the design decision making process for businesses much easier (and easier to live with). And modular design is a powerful tool for software designers to replicate effective successful designs across a spectrum of needs. What You'll Learn Examine the design process in a modular way Adapt your HTML code to create different types of applications Establish your own modular framework for your specific site's goals Design for scale Develop a strong foundation skeleton for design Who This Book Is For User experience designers, user interface designers, information architects, developers with an interest in design, developers who want to create their own design frameworks.

Product design significantly influences product cost and quality, as well as market share and profitability of a firm. Design projects often involve many people belonging to different functional areas and in many organizations several design projects may be under way at the same time. Due to this complexity, management of design has given rise to a rich set of research problems in management and engineering. In this volume, design is considered as the planning and specification activity prior to fabrication. Design determines what products will be produced, how they will be produced, and when they will be introduced into the market. The quality of the products and the speed with which they are developed are significantly affected by the design process. The design process by which a product is developed is determined by the managerial and engineering practices, tools and techniques. This book presents engineering and management perspectives on design. Topics covered include: Decomposition of product development projects; Tools and techniques for preliminary evaluation of designs; Interface between design and manufacturing, assembly and distribution; Design information flows, and Determination of the scope, timing and duration of projects, and the allocation of resources.

Aim: The aim of this study is to shorten the product design and development cycle to meet the continuous change and growth of customer environmental requirements. Methods: The applied research method introduces the concept of the inheritable structure of green products through structural similarity theory and quantitates environmental performance. Additionally, based on the analysis of the obtained customer ecological requirements, a hierarchical mapping method for customer requirements-environmental performance weight-product structure is proposed, which achieves the rapid mapping of customer requirements (CRs) to product structure in the product design process. Then, four mutation operation methods (combination, decomposition, replacement, and material change) are combined with a genetic algorithm, and a method for generating a product structure mutation map is proposed to solve the problem of the non-inheritance of some structures in the product design process. Finally, considering the transmission shell as an example, the validity and feasibility of the method are verified. Results: The case study showed that the overall mass of the rear derailleur dropped by 27.58 kg, and the environmental performance of the transmission was mainly related to its mass; hence, the proposed improvement method effectively improved the environmental performance of the transmission. Conclusion: The hierarchical mapping method for customer requirements-environmental performance weight-product structure and the generation method for the product structure variation diagram proposed in this study can shorten the product design and development cycle. This research can provide theoretical and methodological support for product design and development.

In the industrial design and engineering field, product lifecycle, product development, design process, Design for X, etc., constitute only a small sample of terms related to the generation of quality products. Current best practices cover widely different knowledge domains in trying to exploit them to the best advantage, individually and in synergy. Moreover, standards become increasingly more helpful in interfacing these domains and they are enlarging their coverage by going beyond the single domain boundary to connect closely different aspects of the product lifecycle. The degree of complexity of each domain makes impossible the presence of multipurpose competencies and skills; there is almost always the need for interacting and integrating people and resources in some effective way. These are the best conditions for the birth of theories, methodologies, models, architectures, systems, procedures, algorithms, software packages, etc., in order to help in some way the synergic work of all the actors involved in the product lifecycle. This brief introduction contains all the main themes developed in this book, starting from the analysis of the design and engineering scenarios to arrive at the development and adoption of a framework for product design and process reconfiguration. In fact, the core consists of the description of the Design GuideLines Collaborative Framework (DGLs-CF), a methodological approach that generates a collaborative environment where designers, manufacturers and inspectors can find the right and effective meeting point to share their knowledge and skills in order to contribute to the optimum generation of quality products.

Design Methodology for Future Products – Data Driven, Agile and Flexible provides an overview of the recent research in the field of design methodology from the point of view of the members of the scientific society for product development (WiGeP - Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft für Produktenwicklung e.V.). This book aims to contribute to design methods and their implementation for innovative future products. The main focus is the crucial data-driven, agile, and flexible way of working. Four topics are covered in corresponding chapters, Methods for Product Development and Management, Methods for Specific Products and Systems, Facing the Challenges in Product Development and Model-Based Engineering in Product Development. This publication starts with the agile strategic foresight of sustainable mechatronic and cyber-physical systems, moves on to the topics of system generation engineering in development processes, followed by the technical inheritance in data-driven product development. Product improvements are shown via agile experiential learning based on reverse engineering and via combination of usability and emotions. Furthermore, the development of future-oriented products in the field of biomechatronic systems, sustainable mobility systems and in situ sensor integration is shown. The overcoming of challenges in product development is demonstrated through context-adapted methods by focusing on efficiency and effectiveness, as well as designer-centered methods to tackle cognitive bias. Flow design for target-oriented availability of data and information in product development is addressed. Topics of model-based systems engineering are applied to the function-driven product development by linking model elements at all stages and phases of the product. The potential of model-based systems engineering for modular product families and engineering of multidisciplinary complex systems is shown.

This text explores the re-emergence of product excellence in the design and manufacturing process. It is a knowledge-based approach to manufacturing that attempts to design products that maximize all desirable characteristics in a product design, while at the same time minimizing lifetime costs, including manufacturing costs. DFX objectives include quality and reliability, safety, serviceability, user friendliness and environmental friendliness. This book explains techniques and procedures behind DFX and how it is being incorporated into sound product design.
