In recognition of their documentary value and to conserve their spontaneity, they have not been altered from the form in which they were originally written during the War. The author took the field with one of the Jungdeutschland divisions in October 1914. In August 1916 he was appointed a.d.c. On the Staff of one of the new divisions then being formed. He did not take part in the retreat at the end of the War as he was in a hospital at home in consequence of a serious illness.
