Excerpt from Natural and Cultural Resources Management Plan and Environmental Assessment: Fort Bowie National Historic Site Fort Bowie National Historic Site, a 1000 acre park situated in the north eastern portion of Cochise County, Arizona, contains the ruins of the first and second Fort Bowie, a Butterfield stage station, and other sites and ruins pertaining to mans activities (historic and prehistoric) in the Apa ache Spring area. The national historic site, authorized by an act of Congress (public Law 88-510) approved 30 August 1964, was established in July of 1972. The act designates for preservation the site and remaining structures of Fort Bowie, with additional lands not to exceed a total of acres. The enabling legislation further provides that the historic site be managed in accordance with the National Park Service Organic Act of August 25, 1916, which provides for public use and enjoyment of the site to the extent consistent with preservation of its resources.
