Migration and its associated social practices and consequences have been studied within a multitude of academic disciplines and in the context of policies at local, national and regional level. This edited collection provides an introduction and critical review of conceptual developments and policy contexts of migration scholarship within an Australian and global context, through: political economy analyses of migration and associated transformations; sociological analyses of ‘settling in’ processes; multi-disciplinary analyses of migrant work; a historical review of scholarship on refugees; a Southern theory approach to cultural diversity; sociological reflections on post-nationalism; Cultural Studies analyses of public culture and ‘second generation’ youth cultures; interdisciplinary and Critical Race analyses of ‘race’ and racism; feminist intersectional analyses of migration, belonging and representation; the theorising of cosmopolitanism; a transdisciplinary analysis of gender, transnational families and care; and a comparative, transcontextual analysis of hybridity. An essential contribution to the current mapping of migration studies, with a focus on Australian scholarship in its international context, this collection will be of interest to undergraduates and postgraduates interested in fields such as Sociology, Cultural Studies, Geography and Politics.

This is the first volume of the Proceedings of The Migration Conference 2020. The Migration Conference 2020 was held online due to COVID-19 Pandemic and yet, in over 80 parallel sessions and plenaries key migration debates saw nearly 500 experts from around the world engaging. This collection contains contributions mainly dealing with migration and integration debates. These are only a subset of all presentations from authors who chose to submit full short papers for publication after the conference. There is a poetic convergence between the struggles of people on the move and people in the peripheries of power, as they may collectively envision alternative forms of coexistence and fight together for fundamental rights and a dignified life. The emergence of fresh perspectives on solidarity from local communities across the board can become the driving force behind a transformative movement of the people. Examples of small yet impactful acts of solidarity in the northern Mediterranean region illustrate how migration fuels social change, leading to the alteration of established norms. These examples further challenge the dominant populist narrative of migration, and integration into mainstream society as the only viable solution. The recent influx of migrant arrivals in Europe challenges established paradigms, rekindling discussions on human rights and democracy regarding the treatment of people on the move and their experiences after arriving in a new location. Despite dominant nation-state narratives and inadequate institutional approaches to displacement, narratives of solidarity among local communities have emerged transcending borders, shedding light on the class, race, and gender-based dimensions of migration. In this book, Hakan Shearer Demir examines how displacement and governance influence the meaning of what it means to be "local," as it is constantly reshaped by the diverse experiences, cultural norms, and the connections of newcomers to places, people, and stories in the northern Mediterranean region. Through his Displacement Triggered Community Co-Construction Framework (CCF), Shearer Demir presents an alternative approach that combines meta-integration and municipalist principles, while taking on patriarchy and hierarchies. The CCF offers a potential pathway to establishing a community of equals that prioritizes meeting essential human needs and upholding human dignity. Council of Europe action in the field of cultural heritage targets promoting diversity and dialogue through access to heritage to foster a sense of identity, collective memory and mutual understanding within and between communities. The year 2021 marks the 10th anniversary of the entry into force of the Framework Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society, also known as the Faro Convention. The present publication shows that what emerged back in 2005 as a truly innovative approach is still relevant today and can also have an impact on issues beyond its traditional realm. This is illustrated through a set of articles that demonstrate the pertinence of the Faro Convention’s approach to cultural heritage in addressing different aspects, ranging from democratic participation to tourism rethinking. The wide range of topics addressed and the numerous possibilities described by the various contributors suggest that the next ten years of the Faro Convention will be as challenging and rewarding as the decade that has elapsed since its entry into force.

In 2018, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees documented a record high 71.4 million displaced people around the world. As states struggle with the costs of providing protection to so many people and popular conceptions of refugees have become increasingly politicized and sensationalized, researchers have come together to form regional and global networks dedicated to working with displaced people to learn how to respond to their needs ethically, compassionately, and for the best interests of the global community. This edited collection explores the role of digital inclusion in the welfare and social inclusion of vulnerable people. With interdisciplinary contributors from six continents, working in diverse fields such as digital media studies, social computing, community informatics and cultural studies, the collection brings together theoretical and applied research evidence on three vulnerable population categories: ethnic minorities, older people and people with disabilities. Each section is accompanied by a critical commentary on the research insights presented, from third sector community and policy experts. The collection explores whether vulnerable populations face similar experiences and challenges in relation to their digital inclusion status, stressing the central presence of intersectionality, and arguing for the inclusion of the age, ethnicity/immigration status and disability aspects of one’s identity.
