The 4,000 immigrants listed in this volume were Protestant refugees from Europe who came to South Carolina on the encouragement of an act passed by the General Assembly of the Colony on July 25, 1761, called the Bounty Act. Arranged chronologically, and taken verbatim from the original Council Journals, 1763-1773, the information given in the certificates and petitions for lands under the Bounty Act includes the date and the location and acres granted. In some cases the immigrants are listed with their age, country of origin, and name of the vessel on which they arrived. An excellent index provides references to more than 4,000 names in the text. This book is indispensable in attempting to locate an ancestor's place of settlement in South Carolina.

Wayland's sketches of Rockingham County natives and other persons who had become identified with the county or the City of Harrisonburg reflect a wide variety of occupations, achievements and interests inasmuch as they include farmers, businessmen, educators, preachers, doctors, nurses, lawyers, jurists, statesmen, soldiers, writers, and so on. Part I, the larger of the two components of the volume, consists of extended biographical sketches, with accompanying portraits, of Wayland's contemporaries. The subjects' careers and civic interests are covered in some detail, as is each individual's date and place of birth--and sometimes death-- and the names and dates associated with the subject's marriages and children. Part II features shorter, un-illustrated essays of a few hundred Rockingham County luminaries of bygone years, any number of whose lines are extended back to the 1700s.

Oxford and the surrounding vicinity were originally home to the Nipmuck Indians. They and the Puritan efforts to convert them to Christianity are the subjects at the outset of Mary Freeland's account of Oxford. These essays from an international cast of scholars vary in their subject matter from investigations into links between Irish popular music and the United States—including the popularity of American blues music in Belfast during the 1960s and the influences of Celtic balladry on contemporary singer Van Morrison—to a discussion of the migration of Protestant Orangemen to America and the transplanting of their distinctive non-Catholic organizations. Herein is a story of nine generations of Callahams beginning in Old 96 District, later Pendleton Co. SC. John and Mary (Stinson?) Callaham produced seven or eight children in Pendleton Co. Their John Jr. and Elizabeth (Dobbins) migrated to Jennings Co., IN. Later John & Eliz. migrated again to Cass Co, IN. Elizabeth gave birth to 11 children in IN. Seven remained nearby in Cass and Fulton Counties. Four children migrated. Lucinda ended in Ohio. Their two youngest sons-Alexander Washington and Andrew Morton-settled in Topeka, KS. Robert Crowe, while farming in Kansas, enlisted in the Civil War. He and his wife Jane (Thompson) produced seven sons. Chapters tell about those sons. Three sons migrated West. William Robert to WA. Historians usually look for the origins of American political culture among English-speaking people and British constitutional and legal sources. Yet German immigrants to the colonies also contributed to - and developed for themselves - an American political consciousness. In Palatines, Liberty, and Property A.G. Roeber focuses on this neglected subject and explains why so many Germans, when they faced critical choices in 1776, became active supporters of the patriot cause. Employing a variety of German-language sources, Roeber explores German conceptions of personal and public property in the context of cultural and religious beliefs, village life, and family concerns. He follows all the major German migration streams, beginning with the Palatines in New York and including Germans who settled in Pennsylvania, Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia.
