In recent years, the conservation of tropical forests has received worldwide publicity whereas effective forest management, particularly for timber extraction, has attracted little attention and gained some notoriety. The overall aim of the present paper was to examine how environmental micro-variation in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve of Belize can influence species distribution and thereby inform management strategy. The paper deals first with the background to forest management in Belize, then considers the methodology used in the present study and fin~~ly assesses the preliminary results. The specific objectives are: (1) to assess the effects of changing scale on the variability of selected individual soil properties in forest plots within the same vegetation class; and (2) to examine the variation in soil properties and tree species distribution, and to integrate environmental and ecological data over a range of scales. BACKGROUND Whereas the global and regional distribution of tropical forests is broadly governed by climatic and altitudinal variation, individual forest tracts need to consider a range of other, locally important factors to explain species distribution and change. With very high species diversity, tropical forests present a major challenge in the attempt to unravel controlling factors in distribution and growth (Swaine et aI. 1987). Research that attempts to explain diversity has looked at species distribution according to a range of factors, with a general recognition that soil fertility plays a significant if ill defined role (Swaine 1996).

Sprinting into the grocery story at closing time because your kids need greencoloured snacks for school in the morning. Realizing that when your partner asks if that’s the outfit you’re planning to wear, you’ve planned wrong and will have to change. The time-honoured but unspoken rules men follow when choosing which urinal to use in a public washroom. Saskatoon StarPhoenix columnist Cam Fuller turned these everyday episodes of life into columns that were extraordinarily fun to read, thanks to his deft writing and dry wit. Other times, his affectionate and nostalgic reflections on family and community created a fuller picture, showing us how our lives are shaped day by day. This collection of Cam’s columns reminds us that life is to be lived to the fullest “We all work with the same 26 letters, Cam Fuller just used them better,” —Kevin Mitchell, Sports Editor, Saskatoon StarPhoenix

Memories are all that is left when we die and reflection on our past is our last greatest accomplishment. The memories live on after death and those memories propel us to a different dimension where people with the same memory can connect in the afterlife. Fond memories are what carry us through the Barrier to the Utopia on the other side. It is Heaven and Hell if religion is thrown into the mix. Hell being the barrier trying to prevent you from reaching the other side and Heaven being on the other side. People with few fond memories will find it difficult to reach the other side. The moral is to live your life and amass as many memories as possible because those memories may be your salvation when all is said and done. This is a story of James C. Patch and Jacob Masterson. Two authors living generations apart who have a common goal and that is to make the spirits of countless people know what it’s like to live in the Utopia on the other side of the Barrier. Getting to the other side is perilous to those who have not lived a life full of warm memories. They would find the road difficult. Jim and Jacob will assist them but not without cost.
