Newly available in hardcover, this 20th anniversary edition of a Caldecott Honor classic combines the star power of John Updike and Trina Schart Hyman. Celebrate the little moments that make each month special in this beautiful picture book featuring twelve poems about a family and the turn of the seasons. From the short, frozen days of January, through the light of summer, to the first snowflakes of December, Updike's poems rejoices in the familiar, wondrous qualities that make each part of the year unique. Hyman's award-winning paintings--modeled after her own daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren--depict an interracial family going about the business of their lives throughout the year: sledding in January, watching fireworks in July, and playing in the autumn leaves. Bold and colorful, they're filled with the intricate detail for which her art is famous-- including cameo appearances by the artist and her partner, Jean Aull. Featuring a redesigned cover, the 20th Anniversary Edition of this inclusive Caldecott Honor book is a beautiful read-aloud to treasure throughout the year, with family and friends.

"...This read-along is a richly sensory experience.... sound effects of chirping birds, tromping feet, lowing cows, whirring insects, exploding fireworks, pounding surf, buzzing bees, barking dogs, honking geese, and tolling bells create their own aural metaphors that echo the poet's verse and clearly reflect the seasons." -Booklist

Excerpt from Child's Calendar Beautiful No one collection could possibly contain everyone's favorite. Space limitations make it necessary to exclude much that one feels should be included. It is hoped, however, that there is sufficient material and variety to permit some liberty of choice to teachers and to the children themselves. It has been the rule to offer nothingthat was not in itself good, and then to hold to that which the children liked. In distributing the selections through the different months of the year, the Psalms of King David naturally took their place in November, the Thanksgiving month; the patriotic and heroic poems and hymns fell into our Country's anniversary months - February, the birth-month of so many of our great men; May, the Memorial month; and July the birth-month of the Nation. The nature poems, of course, belong of right to the months whose beauties they celebrate. Other poems are placed where room for them could best be found and should be so used as to serve the convenience of those using them, regardless of their place in the course. The beginning of the first conscious great epoch in a child's life is marked by his first day at school. His year then, begins with September, rathen than January, and so this Calendar of poem and prose begins with the month of the golden-rod and aster, rather than with New Year's Day. It is my privilege to express my debt to President Roosevelt for permission to include extracts from his Inaugural Address. Celebrate 20 years of nightmares with this picturebook version of the classic film, written and drawn by Tim Burton and now featuring word-for-word narration by Christopher Lee! In this beloved picture book that could only come from the visionary mind of author and illustrator TIM BURTON, we meet Jack Skellington-- a well-intentioned inhabitant of Halloweenland. Jack is bored of ''''the scaring, the terror, the fright....tired of being something that goes bump in the night''''. And so, in an effort to bring to joy to his town, Jack kidnaps Santa and takes his place as the jolly old elf. But instead of bringing joy to the world Jack, who is a little more than a grinning skeleton, brings fear by delivering creepy toys and riding a sleigh carried by skeletal reindeer. Only through a number of things going horribly wrong does Jack learn the true meaning of Christmas.
