This book employs a methodology that I have found helpful in dealing with other topics. This procedure is to assemble the New Testament texts on the topic and interpret them, then check this interpretation against usage in early Christian literature outside the New Testament, and finally to examine the doctrinal considerations to determine if the interpretation rests on solid biblical theology. Rather than gathering quotations from secondary literature, my approach is to read the source documents in the original and present the texts in their context. At the time of first edition of the book, mine was the fullest collection of historical statements on early church music readily available. Other studies since that time are largely supportive of the historical facts presented in my work, even if the authors do not consider the evidence normative for today. My conclusion is that the practice of unaccompanied congregational singing rests on good biblical, historical and doctrinal grounds.

"Over ten years in the making, The Encyclopedia of the Stone-Campbell Movement offers for the first time a sweeping historical and theological treatment of this complex, vibrant global communion. Written by more than 300 contributors, this major reference work contains over 700 original articles covering all of the significant individuals, events, places, and theological tenets that have shaped the Movement. Much more than simply a historical dictionary, this volume also constitutes an interpretive work reflecting historical consensus among Stone-Campbell scholars, even as it attempts to present a fair, representative picture of the rich heritage that is the Stone-Campbell Movement."--BOOK JACKET.

Beginning from the garden of Eden, all the way through the early church of Christ, study and examine the Liturgy of worship as designed by God. Written without the "we are right" and "you are wrong" mentality, this study gives the reader an opportunity to learn what God has said without being condemned or judged for their religious conclusions. It is the effort of this treaty to bring unity to a divided brotherhood in the churches of Christ, by presenting honestly the things God has said over these very controversial subjects. What does God really say about handclapping, lifting holy hands, praise teams and multiple song leaders, and vocal bands? Are these really a matter of choice, or are they forbidden by the Lord? This book examines these and many other concerns in great detail.
