Neuro-oncologic (brain and spine) cancers account for 19,000 new cases and 13,000 deaths per year. The early and proper diagnosis of these virulent cancers is critical to patient outcomes and diagnosis and treatment strategies are continually evolving. The multidisciplinary team that manages these patients involves medical and radiation oncology, neurosurgery, neuroimaging, nurses and therapists. Principles and Practices of Neuro-Oncology establishes a new gold standard in care through a comprehensive, multidisciplinary text covering all aspects of neuro-oncology. Six major sections cover all topics related to epidemiology and etiology, molecular biology, clinical features and supportive care, imaging, neuroanatomy and neurosurgery, medical oncology and targeted therapies, and radiation oncology for adult and pediatric cancers. Expert contributors from multiple disciplines provide detailed and in-depth discussions of the entire field of neuro-oncology including histopathologic harmonization, neurosurgical techniques, quality of life and cognitive functions, and therapeutic changes in terms of combined modality treatments, advanced radiation techniques, the advent of new drugs, especially targeted agents, and the tantalizing early promise of personalized therapeutic approaches. With contributions from over 180 authors, numerous diagrams, illustrations and tables, and a 48 page color section, Principles and Practice of Neuro-Oncology reflects the breadth and depth of this multi-faceted specialty.

Treatment of patients with intracranial gliomas, especially high-grade neoplasms, usually requires postoperative adjuvant therapy. Significant progress in the understanding of tumor biology, technological advances in irradiation delivery, and development of novel antitumor drugs have led to an expansion of the therapeutic arsenal in neuro-oncology. This publication provides a unique review of the various options for adjuvant therapy. Special emphasis is on current evidence-based treatment standards and guidelines, and on perspectives of further improvement in long-term outcomes. Chapters review the histopathological and molecular features of gliomas and describe basic principles and clinical results of fractionated radiotherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, brachytherapy, use of radiosensitizers, systemic chemotherapy and antiangiogenic therapy. Particular attention is paid to treatment of pediatric patients and to physical and psychological rehabilitation and supportive care at the end of life. This book and its accompanying volumes are mainly directed at neuro-oncologists, radiation oncologists, and other clinicians treating patients with brain tumors.

Foreword from the Field Chief Editor, Giuseppe Giaccone Once again Frontiers in Oncology has started the year on a positive note, breaking previous records for submissions and publications, as well as the number of Research Topic article collections posted. The journal continues to grow in size, adding an 18th section focusing on Cancer Metabolism, led by Michael Lisanti and Ubaldo Martinez-Outschoorn, and has brought on a total of five new Chief Editors. Here, introducing Frontiers in Oncology: Quarterly Highlights, we feature a collection of carefully selected articles published during the first quarter of 2019 across the different sections. With a record number of papers to choose from, the papers enclosed in this Special Edition highlight some of the recent advances across the different disciplines. With an array of papers looking at everything from translational research to association studies and clinical trial results, Frontiers in Oncology continues to publish high-quality research from researchers around the world. Many of the recently posted Research Topics in the journal focus on early diagnosis and prevention, as well as the importance of survivorship studies and outcomes of cancer treatment. Consideration of such aspects of cancer research and treatment is pivotal in the global effort towards increased survival rates and improved quality of life. With ASCO 2019 marking the end of Q1 and the transition into Q2, the journal looks forward to the rest of the year, and continuing to play an active role in the research community. Giuseppe Giaccone

This book is comprised of extensive reviews and instructional chapters that discuss the quality of life in several aspects of cancer. The first six chapters deal with conceptual issues relating to measuring quality of life in adult and pediatric populations with cancer. The next five chapters provide practical information on how to select quality-of-life measures, the statistical analysis of trials, economic evaluations to be considered, and some possible abuses of quality-of-life measures. Five chapters review the results of studies using selected quality-of-life measures and provide recent information on their performance. These are followed by three chapters dealing with specific issues relating to nausea and vomiting associated with cancer therapy. Three chapters are devoted to the problems of assessing and controlling pain in patients who have cancer. There are also two chapters that deal with the quality of life in palliative care. Effect of Cancer on Quality of Life is intended for all who have an interest in measuring the quality of life in patients with cancer. This includes investigators who are just entering the field and can benefit from instructions on how to conduct quality-of-life research, as well as those who are experienced in conducting this kind of research.
