The term ‘intelligent environment’ (IE) refers to a physical space that is enhanced by digital technologies. Such environments are designed to improve the quality of life of the people who live or work in them, and are equipped with technologies such as sensing systems and artificial intelligence which can detect changes in the environment, anticipate user requirements, and provide personalized services and experiences to users. This book presents presents papers from Workshops held during the first two days of IE2023, the 19th International Conference on Intelligent Environments, held in Mauritius between 27 and 30 June 2023, with an online participation available for those who could not travel to the island. The papers are grouped under the headings of the various workshops: the 12th International Workshop on the Reliability of Intelligent Environments (WoRIE’23); the 3rd International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Emerging Topics (ALLEGET’23); the 3rd International Workshop on Self-Learning in Intelligent Environments (SeLIE’23); the 2nd International Workshop on Edge AI for Smart Agriculture (EAISA’23); and the 12th International Workshop on Intelligent Environments Supporting Healthcare and Well-being (WISHWell’2023), and represent a diverse array of cutting-edge research reflective of this exciting area of study. The book offers an overview of the latest and most exciting developments in intelligent-environments research, and will be of interest to all those working in the field.

Intelligent environments (IE) combine physical spaces with ICT and pervasive technology to improve a user’s awareness of their surroundings, empower them to carry out tasks, enrich their experience, and enhance their ability to manage such environments. A growing community, from academia to practitioners, is working to bring intelligent environments to life. This work is driven by the innovative ideas and technological progress that are making the sensors and computing devices required for intelligent environments more affordable and energy-efficient. The conference was due to take place in Dubai, UAE, but was held as a virtual event from 21 to 24 June 2021 due to the restrictions associated with the Covid-19 pandemic. The contributions to these workshops reflect the multi-disciplinary and transversal aspects of intelligent environments, and cover the latest research and development in intelligent environments and related areas, focusing on pushing the boundaries and contributing to the establishment of intelligent environments in the real world. ISAmI is the International Symposium on Ambient Intelligence, aiming to bring together researchers from various disciplines that constitute the scientific field of Ambient Intelligence to present and discuss the latest results, new ideas, projects and lessons obtained from recent experiences in building AmI systems. France is a Pacific power, with three territories, a military presence, and extensive investments. Once seen by many as a colonial interloper in the South Pacific, by the early 2000s, after it ended nuclear testing in French Polynesia and negotiated transitional Accords responding to independence demands in New Caledonia, France seems to have become generally accepted as a regional partner, even if its efforts concentrate on its own territories rather than the independent island states. But Frances future in the region has yet to be secured. By 2014 it is to have handed over a set of agreed autonomies to the New Caledonian government, before an independence referendum process begins. Past experience suggests that a final resolution of the status of New Caledonia will be divisive and could lead once again to violent confrontations. In French Polynesia, calls continue for independence and for treatment under UN decolonisation procedures, which France opposes. Other island leaders are watching, so far putting faith in the Noumea Accord, but wary of the final stages. The issues and possible solutions are more complex than the French Pacific island population of 515,000 would suggest.
