This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 4th International Workshop on Mining Web Data, WEBKDD 2002, held in Edmonton, Canada, in July 2002. The 10 revised full papers presented together with a detailed preface went through two rounds of reviewing and improvement and were selected from 23 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on categorization of users and usage, prediction and recommendation, and evaluation of algorithms.

After the advent of data mining and its successful application on conventional data, Web-related information has been an appropriate and increasingly popular target of knowledge discovery. Depending on whether the data used in the knowledge discovery process concerns the Web itself in terms of content or the usage of the content, one distinguishes between Web content mining and Web usage mining. This book is the first one entirely devoted to Web usage mining. It originates from the WEBKDD'99 Workshop held during the 1999 KDD Conference. The ten revised full papers presented together with an introductory survey by the volume editors documents the state of the art in this exciting new area. With the rapid growth of the World Wide Web, Web mining has become a hot topic and is now part of the mainstream of Web - search, such as Web information systems and Web intelligence. Among all of the possible applications in Web research, e-commerce and e-services have been iden- fied as important domains for Web-mining techniques. Web-mining techniques also play an important role in e-commerce and e-services, proving to be useful tools for understanding how e-commerce and e-service Web sites and services are used, e- bling the provision of better services for customers and users. Thus, this book will focus upon Web-mining applications in e-commerce and e-services.
