Sergeant Victor Lundy created 158 superb sketches which capture his experiences with the 26th Infantry Division in World War II. His days in training are well documented, as are the scenes of his embarkation and journey by convoy to Cherbourg on the coast of France. His unit was transported to the front via Red Ball Express and joined General Patton's 3rd Army as it fought for every hill and village, trying to drive the Germans from France. The exciting conclusion is a harrowing first-person narrative of the desperate battle for a tiny French village. There are few moments more consequential in combat than staring down the barrel of a Tiger Tank. Fortunately, Victor Lundy survived to tell his story.

Offering an international perspective on war commemoration, contributors consider the process of assembling historical facts and subjective experiences to show how these points of view diverge according to various social, cultural, political, and historical perspectives. Encompassing the representations of wars in the English-speaking world over the last hundred years, this collection presents an extensive, yet integrated, reflection on various types of commemoration and interpretations of events. Many of the creators examined here embody the human experience of war: first-hand witnesses who developed a unique visual language in direct response to their role as victim, soldier, refugee, resister, prisoner and embedded or official artist. Contributors address specific issues relating to propaganda, wartime femininity and masculinity, women as war artists, trauma, the role of art in soldiery, memory, art as resistance, identity and the memorialisation of war.
