In 1963, the U.S. Army began developing the 1st Calvary Division for jungle fighting in Vietnam. It would be the first division fully dependent on helicopters for assault and support. During the 1968 Tet Offensive, Ed Corlew served as a crew chief and door gunner aboard a CH-47 "Chinook," based 15 miles from the DMZ. Well armed and capable of deploying platoon-sized infantry units, the tandem-rotored Chinook and it's crew were a formidable weapon in jungle warfare--large and lightly armored, they also presented easy targets. Corlew was shot down three times: in the Battle of Hue, the Battle of Quang Tri, and in the A Shau Valley. His memoir relates harrowing missions over landing zones beset with hidden enemy positions, his return home and his reflection on the war.

Like many other young men during the Vietnam War, Ed Corlew enlisted in hopes of having some influence regarding assignment--safety and training. Instead he found himself in the dangerous door gunner position and, soon after, the crew chief aboard a CH-47 Chinook, 15 miles from the DMZ in 1967 and 1968. Assigned to the famed 1st Cavalry Division, Corlew was shot down three times: in the Battle of Hue, the Battle of Quang Tri, and the A Shau Valley. This memoir began both as a journal and as counselor-recommended therapy for PTSD. He earned four bronze service stars for his service (an estimated 1000 flying hours) during the war's bloodiest year, enduring enemy mortar and rocket attacks. Engaging, frank, and full of action, Corlew describes his many combat experiences as well as the emotional effects--all through the lens of his Christian faith.

The Boeing Vertol CH-47 Chinook heavy-lift helicopter has become an icon. Its tandem, contra-rotating rotors whirling above an aluminum fuselage punctuated by round porthole windows make this battlefield beast easily recognizable. Its status is owed to its long service life of more than 55 years. Experts predict its longevity will ultimately reach a century of service for heavy lift and use as a flying bus to deliver troops to the fight. This all-new volume explores the development and the U.S. military service of 13 models of Chinook from 1958 to date. Included is extensive coverage of the CH-47's use in Vietnam through Desert Storm and into current operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Additional coverage is provided of the helicopters use during various disaster relief efforts in the United States and around the world. More than 160 archival color photos, augmented by 48 vintage black and white images and numerous line drawings, present a clear and concise illustrated history of this iconic helicopter.
