The Sixth Latin American Symposium on Nuclear Applications covered the most active topics in basic nuclear physics which were grouped into four broad categories, namely, nuclear structure, nuclear reactions, subnuclear physics, and nuclear thermodynamics and dynamics. It also placed a significant emphasis on the applications of nuclear science and nuclear instrumentation to a wide range of fields of knowledge.

This volume brings together experts on the quark-gluon structure of matter as it applies to nucleon resonance physics. The contributions discuss the latest findings in areas such as meson production via electromagnetic and hadronic reactions, baryon resonance structure in chiral and lattice QCD approaches, and the extraction of resonance parameters from coupled-channels analysis of data.

International collaboration has become increasingly important in carrying out research activities. This book, written by a large group of scholars from Europe and Latin America, maps, analyses and discusses research collaboration between the two continents during the last twenty years. The empirical material underlines the richness and the variety of the links that bind the two continents, well beyond the simplified views of science, either as the brainchild of global networking or as a result of dependence. In Adapting Watercourse Agreements to Developments in International Law: The Case of the Itaipu Treaty Maria A. Gwynn offers an account of the need to align watercourses agreements to the current standards and principles of international law, thereby increasing prospects for achieving sustainable development. As a case study, the author focuses on the most important hydroelectrical energy treaty in the South American region and astutely explores its implementation together with states’ practices regarding the non-navigational uses of watercourses and their commitments to environmental protection. The analysis offers a unique opportunity to assess the value of the UN Watercourses Convention in recommending states adapt their agreements to the provisions of the convention promoting equitable and reasonable uses of watercourses; an interest not only for the treaty partners but also for river basin states and the international community as a whole.
