Excerpt from Vegetable Wasps and Plant Worms: A Popular History of Entomogenous Fungi, or Fungi Parasitic Upon Insects Only one attempt has been made to produce a work of this kind in Britain, and that was undertaken just thirty-five years ago. Mr. G. R. Gray's "Memoir" was, moreover, privately printed, and was necessarily exceedingly limited in its circulation. During the intervening period many additions have been made to the list of species, and more facts have become known, so that another effort was desirable. It will be evident that the subject may be approached and viewed from two different positions. One aspect will be associated with the entomophytes themselves - an aspect which will commend itself to mycologists. The other will be concerned with the hosts upon which the fungi are parasitic, and all sympathy will rest with them; such a position as we would accord to entomologists. In the work above alluded to the subject was treated from the entomological side, whereas my own antecedents would attract me to the mycological side. In this eloquent plea for compassion and respect for all species, journalist and gardener Nancy Lawson describes why and how to welcome wildlife to our backyards. Through engaging anecdotes and inspired advice, profiles of home gardeners throughout the country, and interviews with scientists and horticulturalists, Lawson applies the broader lessons of ecology to our own outdoor spaces. Detailed chapters address planting for wildlife by choosing native species; providing habitats that shelter baby animals, as well as birds, bees, and butterflies; creating safe zones in the garden; cohabiting with creatures often regarded as pests; letting nature be your garden designer; and encouraging natural processes and evolution in the garden. The Humane Gardener fills a unique niche in describing simple principles for both attracting wildlife and peacefully resolving conflicts with all the creatures that share our world.
