University and university students of various disciplines (health, technology and engineering, humanities, social sciences or basic sciences) have set their sights on certain cultural references to return them to the citizenry and invite us to reflect on these manifestations of collective and diachronic solidarity, of how those people in the past did or created things that have contributed to our welfare, but that above all-, they are manifestations of the personal and collective drive of so many people to improve their living conditions and enrich themselves with the creativity of others, thus generating human development. The texts and references presented here are the results of a University Workshop on Cultural Heritage and Human Development. This is a civic reflexive exercise that anyone can do about the cultural and scientific references of their environment or the place they visit.

This book investigates the relationship between heritage and development from the global visions articulated by UNESCO and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to local activism, livelihood innovations and political strategies employed in diverse countries of the Global South. In recent years, as culturally informed approaches to international development have become increasingly important, engaging with heritage has been seen as a way to draw on practices and meanings from the past to help build future development. This book gathers researchers and practitioners from across disciplines to address important themes such as health, the environment, sustainability, peace, security, tourism and economic growth. In doing so, the book asks us to consider whose past and whose future is ultimately at stake in efforts to use heritage for development. The Future of the Past is a biennial conference generally carried out during the commemoration date of the incorporation of Santa Ana de Los Ríos de Cuenca Ecuador as a World Heritage Site (WHS). It initiated in 2014, organized by the City Preservation Management research project (CPM) of the University of Cuenca, to create a space for dialoguing among interested actors in the cultural heritage field. Since then, this space has served to exchange initiatives and to promote coordinated actions based on shared responsibility, in the local context. The third edition of this conference took place in the context of the 20th anniversary of being listed as WHS and a decade of CPM as the Southern host of the PRECOM3OS UNESCO Chair (Preventive Conservation, Maintenance and Monitoring of Monuments and Sites). For the very first time, and thanks to the collaboration with the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation of the University of Leuven (Belgium), the conference expanded its local scope. On this occasion, contributions reflected round a worldwide challenge in the cultural field: revealing the paths towards participatory governance of cultural heritage. Participatory governance is understood as institutional decision-making structures supported by shared responsibilities and rights among diverse actors.

This is volume 2 of a two-volume work. It discusses a set of ten sectoral plans about natural environment, agriculture and husbandry, urban environment and social welfare, infrastructures and mobility, cultural heritage, tourism and public use, landscape, sustainability, socio-demography, economic development and governance. The sectoral plans are accompanied by eighteen pilot projects that develop in detail their most sensitive or relevant parts. The book is intended for planners and researchers from various disciplines, including urban planning, forestry, agriculture, cultural and touristic management, and sustainability studies. The book presents a unique example of integral planning at different scales and across different types of landscapes found on the outskirts of metropolitan areas. It features a sustainability orientated integrated plan to maximise the performance of the south-central area of the Calderona Mountain Range, Spain (Sierra Calderona). It is informed and driven by social, cultural, perceptual, sustainability and economic factors supported by a participative process, acknowledging the frequent conflict between the natural and cultural values found there and the strong pressure for transformation and public use. More than half of the world’s population now live in urban areas, and cities provide the setting for contemporary challenges such as population growth, mass tourism and unequal access to socio-economic opportunities. Urban Heritage, Development and Sustainability examines the impact of these issues on urban heritage, considering innovative approaches to managing developmental pressures and focusing on how taking an ethical, inclusive and holistic approach to urban planning and heritage conservation may create a stronger basis for the sustainable growth of cities in the future.
