"Gems and Gemstones" features nearly 300 color images of cut gems, precious and semiprecious stones, gem-quality mineral specimens, and fine jewelry to be unveiled in the new Grainger Hall of Gems at the Field Museum in Chicago.

This part deals mainly with the disilicates and ring silicates including the epidote, melilite, cordierite and tourmaline groups. In addition to the minerals dealt with in the first edition, some of the rarer but typical minerals in the calc-silicate rocks and the accessory minerals of nepheline-syenites and related rocks have been included. The orthosilicates, in particular the olivine, garnet and humite groups are covered in Volume 1A.

This is a compilation of bibliographic (historical and descriptive) information for the minerals first described from Brazil; it includes both valid and invalid, discredited species, unnamed, unidentified, problematic minerals, and so on. This work brings together as much data as possible concerning type mineral species. It will save future researchers a lot of work because it contains data from many publications that are difficult to obtain.
