Lexa Pate, seventeen-year-old thief extraordinaire, has burned a bridge or two in her life. You don’t make a career out of stealing other people’s property without making enemies. Now every bounty hunter, cop on the take, and snitch in the city is after them. Lexa’s world crumbles around her as she fights to keep her family safe even as someone strolls out of her forgotten past. Quinn claims to know who Lexa really is, but can she trust a stranger she met while robbing his boss? More importantly, does she really want to know what Quinn has to tell her? Based on the fairy tale Pinocchio, UNSTRUNG takes you into a near future world where the lines between fake and real are blurred, all that’s pristine isn’t always innocent, and being a criminal isn’t always wrong.

Teens who get pregnant and raise their babies are often in the news. But what about those children who are growing up with parents scarcely half a generation older than themselves? In this wise and funny first novel by Carole Lazar, Lucy is a sensible, perhaps even rigid, thirteen year old who is convinced that Grandma, God, and the Catholic Church are on her side. She tries hard to make her twenty-eight-year-old mother see the error of her ways. It's not that her mother is wild - in their household even a fancy coffee causes a scene - but she has had to put off her own teenage years and she's chaffing at the restraints on her life. Lucy is faced with the loss of her family, her home, her school, and even her best friend. As she struggles to preserve what she can from her past life, she finds that while Grandma, God, and her church are still there for her, there are problems she has to solve for herself.

Nothing's going to distract Clara from her big life plan as a viola player. Not her semi-famous dad. Not her new stepmom. Not her annoying sisters. And definitely not Tim, the swoopy-haired Scrabble geek.... You might think it's fun to grow up around Hollywood with semi-famous parents. You'd be wrong, and Clara Cassidy would be the first to tell you so. She's fourteen, figuring out life with three siblings and a new stepmom, and navigating her freshman year at a stupid high school where she doesn't even want to be. She was supposed to be at arts school by now. It's fine, though, totally fine: she's going to practice her viola extra hard and get into LACHSA next year. She's definitely 100 percent focused and not even slightly going to get distracted by Tim, the sophomore Scrabble champion with the swoopy hair and the chin dimple. Nope. Not her.

A connected series of vignettes creating not just a story but a state of being. Beginning in love and culminating in the changes of the body in pregnancy, this utterly moving work is poetry, philosophy, and, with inessentials stripped away, the emotional heart of the art of fiction. Consisting of sixty-two brief, 2- or 3-page visions, the book presents us with a narrator imperceptibly changing from the male lover into the female beloved. Along the way we find ourselves awash in philosophy, poetry, emotion and perception. Kona deals in the most down-to-earth images--rice, red pepper, the tip of a pencil--and at the same time in the most general states of being--paradox, amnesia, separation, love. The fluidity of his mind, the freedom with which he crosses boundaries, is always in the service of an ideal view of mankind, one that sees the emotional and true-hearted creatures we could be, and simply becomes that ideal in the course of writing. In writing a book about love, Kona shows a mirror to the love in all of us. About the Author Prakash Kona lives in Hyderabad, India. He is the author of one previous novel, Streets that Smell of Dying Roses; a work of theory, Literary Criticism: A Study in Pluralism, available from Wisdom House Publications; and two books of poetry published by Writer's Workshop, Calcutta. He completed his doctoral studies with a comparative study of Chomsky, Derrida and Wittgenstein at the University of Mississippi, Oxford, MS. He has recently returned to Hyderabad after a stint as assistant professor of English Literature and Humanities at Eastern Mediterranean University in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Prakash believes in, among other things, the power of alternate discourses and the ideal of a classless society.
