This book is about a shocking revelation of a sovereign country- Uganda, which is under abominable siege, by a foreign occupation army from Rwanda, with its diabolic criminal gang, who entered Uganda as refugees, including the so-called General Yoweri Museveni. It was alleged that they fled their country Rwanda escaping the Hutu's heightened political tensions and repressions in the 60s, under J. Habyarimana's regime. By the time Uganda gained its Independence from the British in 1962, it was unthinkable, why the British who were watching the massive Tutsi-Rwanda influx into Uganda yet, they could not stop it, why? But in 1980, the Tutsi-Rwanda ethnic groups had organized themselves and formed their military front -the NRA/RPU-Rwanda Patriotic Unity under Yoweri Museveni, the guerrilla warfare Leader. Uganda’s population is estimated to be over 45 million with a diverse range of ethnic groups, religions, and cultures. Much has already been written about the effects of the changes of the Cold War on conflict. The ongoing disengagement of East and West from bipolar Cold-War politics has resulted in an unstable international political situation which is characterized by regional conflicts. Most analyses now concentrate on the consequences for Europe and the former communist Central and East European states. This book, however, explores the effects for the Third World. The contributors provide major theoretical analyses of the causes of conflict in developing countries. Four main factors are distinguished: the processes of state-formation and nation-building; the rise or return of ethnicity and nationalism; socio-economic factors; and the armaments-conflict nexus. The volume also provides in-depth regional analyses, as well as policy perspectives on the issue of conflict and development.

Conflict economies cannot be approached in isolation but must instead be contextualised socially and historically. These economies did not emerge in vacuum, but are part and parcel of the history of people and place. This book explores the informal and illicit extraction and trade of minerals and other types of natural resources that takes place in the 'borderlands' during periods of conflict. This type of extraction and marketing, often referred to as ‘conflict trade’ depends on a weak state, and works alongside the structures of the state and its officials. The book emphasises that conflicts do not start as competition over natural resources and in turn suggests that the integration of the extraction and marketing of natural resources only starts once fighting is well under way. Boas argues that although economic agendas are an integral part of African conflicts, the desire to accumulate is not the only motivation. Thus, in order to present a more comprehensive analysis of conflict we need to take into account political, cultural, and historical factors, in addition to the economic dimensions of conflict.
