Four important factors have shaped the forests of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the world's stellar example of southern Appalachian forests. These factors are elevation, landform, forest succession and exotic tree pests. This book explains how to identify and understand the Park's forests based these factors. Elevation and landform are defined and summarized in the Forest Finder, a graphical representation of the 15 major southern Appalachian forest types found in the Park. You can use the Forest Finder to identify forests when you visit Great Smoky Mountains National Park and surrounding national forests. Each forest type is described in detail, as are most of the major trees of the southern Appalachians. Also included are instructions on downloading and interpreting free topographic maps that contain the elevation and land shape information used as inputs to the Forest Finder. Southern Appalachian forest succession is clearly explained, and the reader is shown how to interpret changes in forest succession brought about by land clearing and logging operations in the Park. The associated tree table shows shade tolerance ratings, canopy position and moisture preference for major southern Appalachian trees and shrubs. Important exotic tree pests are described, including the chestnut blight and the hemlock wooly adelgid, as well as their drastic effect on the Park's forests. Along the way the reader learns how to sample the forest using skills like pacing, measuring tree diameter, estimating tree age, determining successional stage and identifying major southern Appalachian tree species. The book directs readers to a web site where free large scale, full color versions of all maps and graphs in the book can be downloaded.

This comprehensively updated and expanded edition of the region’s best-selling field guide to trees offers much, much more than the highly successful first edition. Fully updated text (including additional species entries) and distribution maps, numerous new photographs and a new 87-page section of full-tree photographs makes this well-loved guide even more indispensable in the field. Southern Africa has a rich variety of tree species, with an estimated 2 100 indigenous species and more than 100 naturalised aliens. Field Guide to Trees of Southern Africa describes and illustrates more than 1 000 of these, focusing on trees that are the most common and most likely to be encountered. Species are logically arranged in 43 groups based on easy-to-observe leaf and stem features, and each account is illustrated by full-colour photographs of the plant’s diagnostic parts. The text also touches on the practical uses of the plants.

Stuarts’ Field Guide to National Parks and Nature Reserves of South Africa is an indispensable guide to the country’s best and most accessible conservation areas. Written by two prominent conservationists, this new edition (with a slight name change) has been thoroughly revised and updated. The 43 featured reserves are arranged by province. Information details the history, location, landscape, geology, vegetation (with maps) and wildlife (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and insects) of each reserve. Text panels list the highlights and provide key facts about each park’s wildlife, climate, facilities and activities, as well as critical warnings for visitors. More than 900 colour photographs support the text. Detailed park maps indicate places of interest, including where to view particular animals. At the back of the book is a concise pictorial ID guide featuring the birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, flowers and trees most commonly seen in the reserves. This is a handy, informative, must-have guide to South Africa’s famously diverse and richly populated parks and reserves.
