Whether you believe in them or not, the legends surrounding tress and plants contain powerful images which appeal to us because of their humanity and sheer simplicity. God employed a burning bush as a medium of revelation when He spoke to Moses, and every tree or plant on this planet is afire with His presence. for example, in the plant realm, the cornflower has ultraviolet pigments in its blue petals, which are invisible to the human eye, but irresistible to a pollinating bee. In the realm of trees, the seed of the maple is equipped with a neat pair of wings, which enables it to sail away from the parent on a current of air. Jesus used trees and plants as metaphors, and early monks and missionaries took up the torch, relabeling a number of trees and plants with holy names as an educational tool. In this book, I have sought to rescue some of these legends from obscurity, concentrating on those within the Judeo-Christian tradition: in a few instances I have taken the liberty of linking biblical references to botanical names. It is my hope that this collection, with its beautiful photographs and simple text, will reach a wide readership, to inform, inspire, and entertain.

An entertaining and enthralling collection of myths, tales and traditions surrounding our trees, woodlands and forests from around the world. From the dark, gnarled woodlands of the north, to the humid jungles of the southern lands, trees have captured humanity's imagination for millennia. Filled with primal gods and goddesses, dryads and the fairy tales of old, the forests still beckon to us, offering sanctuary, mystery and more than a little mischievous trickery. From insatiable cannibalistic children hewn from logs, to lumberjack lore, and the spine-chilling legend of Bloody Mary, there is much to be found between the branches. Come into the trees; witches, seductive spirits and big, bad wolves await you. With this book, Folklore Thursday aim to encourage a sense of belonging across all cultures by showing how much we all have in common.

"From oaks and maples to the more exotic dragon's blood and baobab species, trees are known and appreciated across the globe. This book is a mini encyclopedia of sorts-for not only trees, but also tree-related topics like reforestation, forest fires, emerald ash-borers, and more. Similar to Millman's Fungipedia, this book will include entries on both the commonplace and the whimsical alike, with line drawings throughout. The book has roughly 80 entries, in which readers will explore topics ranging from the vast Tongass forest in Alaska to the comparatively very small meristem cells, which allow trees to generate new growth. In addition to entries on the biological and ecological aspects of trees, the book also features more culturally focused entries, including those on historical figures such as renowned nature writer John Muir, and activist Wangari Maathai. Similar to Fungipedia, the book is intended for a general audience, however, it will also appeal to seasoned tree enthusiasts. Entries are supplemented with line drawings from Maren Westfall"--
