Companion Lowry was a member of Burlington Chapter and Coinmandery, -and also of Washington Lodge; made a Mason before the antimasonic excitement in this country, he continued steadfast and true to his obligations, when so many blenched and deserted their standard, fearing to encounter the blast. What a pleasant reflection to the faithful few, when, after years of trial, the order has at length emerged from the cloud of adversity for so long obscuring the brightness of its success, and with undiminished lustre has been restored to its former glory, that "they knew the right, and knowing, dared maintain." These veterans, whom no epithet of abuse, no monstrous lie of ignorance or prejudice, could prevail upon for a moment to deny or be false to the principles they professed--these old die-hards, who scorned to surrender their belief to the pressure of public opinion, however violent, deserve especial doubtless, ere this, been rehonor at our hands; for were it not for them, we should not at this time have been able to place Masonry in its present proud position, and successfully have repelled the storm of calumny and malice that then assailed-it, and threatened to endanger its very existence. Companion Stebbins belonged to Lafayette Chapter, and had been elected to preside over that body. His long life, usefully and honorably spent, is another living witness of the beauty of the tenets of our profession, when conscientiously practiced in the path we are all traveling here below.
