This book explores the masculinity and sexuality of migration, analyzing the complex processes of becoming a man and the strategies used by men to reconcile paradoxes and contradictions that co-exist between multiple masculinities and contradictory models of being a man. Vasquez del Aguila offers a number of conceptual contributions, including the notion of “masculine capital” that provides men with the necessary “masculine” skills and cultural competence to achieve legitimacy and social recognition as men; an analysis of male friendship where notions of solidarity and intimacy co-exist with those of distrust, competition, and power relations; and three social representations of being a man: the winner, the failed, and the good enough man. By analyzing heterosexual as well as gay masculinities, and incorporating race and class relations, this study shows the multiplicity and hierarchies of masculinities presented within a particular cultural context. Through ethnographic research undertaken over more than four years in New York and Lima, Peru, this book also examines the role of the Internet and transnational romances and the ways in which migration can create new opportunities for male sexual intimacy, while for others, it creates loneliness and isolation.

This work discusses Gender Mainstreaming from a post-development perspective, while it explores in which ways the Capability Approach may contribute to this strategy. The author puts notions of well-being at the heart of her arguments and questions the concrete practices of the development apparatus that derive from the idea of bringing gender equality to the Global South. She looks at the power structures which shape the relationships between development professionals, local experts, and local participants. This interdisciplinary research has followed the Grounded Theory methodology using its potential to decolonize knowledge production. The fieldwork was conducted in Germany and Bolivia. Dissertation. Reversible grammar allows computational models to be built that are equally well suited for the analysis and generation of natural language utterances. This task can be viewed from very different perspectives by theoretical and computational linguists, and computer scientists. The papers in this volume present a broad range of approaches to reversible, bi-directional, and non-directional grammar systems that have emerged in recent years. This is also the first collection entirely devoted to the problems of reversibility in natural language processing. Most papers collected in this volume are derived from presentations at a workshop held at the University of California at Berkeley in the summer of 1991 organised under the auspices of the Association for Computational Linguistics. Aunque la muerte es lo único que tenemos seguro, no es más que un cambio para nuestra alma del plano físico al plano espiritual; sin embargo, puede ser que ciertas circunstancias de la vida nos impidan dar el gran paso quedándonos atorados en el plano terrenal, que ya no nos corresponde, sin estar conscientes de nuestro fallecimiento. Los apegos a seres queridos, bienes materiales y a situaciones especiales, son suficientes para atrapar a un ser confundido impidiéndole seguir su camino evolutivo.
