Kurt Weinstock has it all. Hes had a secure job at the East Florida Shipyard for the past twenty-six years. His wife makes a good living as a real estate agent. His sons are headed off to college, and the mortgage is finally paid off . Its the perfect time for Kurt to think about retiring and relaxing in some Florida beach bungalow. But then, something happens and the world as Kurt knew it is gone. A destructive cosmic event occurs, leaving few survivors in north Florida and possibly world-wide. Kurt has to follow his instincts to survive in this new primitive world, and somehow, his instincts make him into a mythic hero. People call him Captain Kurt, and they come from miles around, begging for his support and knowledge. What was once the life of an average Joe is now something quite different. Its not only the helpless that have come to Kurt for help, though. Along with dodging angry Floridian beasts, he now hides from incoming factions of survivors who do not believe in peace. Instead, they hope to exert their dominance over whats left of humanity, with Captain Kurts help. Now, Kurt has much more to worry about than angry animals; apparently, humanity is no better than the beasts.

“Oh, yes,” a retired NVA officer matter-of-factly declared to former U.S. Marine Otto J. Lehrack. “In the Que Son Valley in 1967, we killed more Americans than at any time or place during the war.” Road of 10,000 Pains, which takes its name from The Iliad, is an epic oral history of Vietnam's bloodiest campaign, fought for seven months in a series of battles, most within four miles of each other, along Route 534. In October 1967, orders came down to the 2nd North Vietnamese Army Division commanding them to join with local Viet Cong units and seize the city of Da Nang in the coming Tet Offensive. When the time came, the division was so battered from its seven-month campaign in the Que Son Valley that it failed to carry out its mission. Only one platoon was to make it inside the city limits of Da Nang. Had it not been for the violent struggles in the valley, Da Nang may have suffered the same fate as the city of Hue.

In The Finishing School, former Navy SEAL Dick Couch, author of the acclaimed Warrior Elite, follows SEALs on the ground and in the water as they undergo SEAL Tactical Training. In America’s new war, the first guns in the fight are special operations forces, including the Navy SEALs, specially trained warriors who operate with precision, swiftness, and lethal force. In the constantly shifting war on terror, SEAL units—small in number, flexible, stealthy, and efficient—are more vital than ever to America’s security as they take the battle to an elusive enemy around the globe. But how are Navy SEALs made? In Warrior Elite, Couch narrated one SEAL class's journey through BUD/S training, the brutal initial course that separates out candidates with the character and stamina necessary to begin training as Navy SEALs. In The Finishing School, Couch follows SEALs into the next levels of training—SEAL Tactical Training—where they master combat skills such as precision shooting, demolitions, secure communications, parachuting, diving, and first aid. From there, the men enter operational platoons, where they subordinate their individual abilities to the mission of the group and train for special operations in specific geographic environments. Never before has a civilian writer been granted such close access to the training of America’s most elite military forces. The Finishing School is essential reading for anyone who wants to know what goes into the making of America’s best warriors.
