In Toxic Tales of Sin, you’ll find a series of mysteries dealing with the serious but illusive topic of homicidal poisonings. Surprisingly, a contingency you most likely have not contemplated regarding ingested toxins is that they may be intentionally initiated by a member of your circle of acquaintances or even a family member. Many find this statement a shocking revelation. On the contrary, the facts indicate that health organizations report an incomprehensible number of such deadly actions occurring every day by devious individuals who are determined to harm you. This work is meant to alert you to such incredulous descriptions of cunning and secretive means of executing lethal acts by presenting them in fi ctional tales of mystery so as to bring to light not only the details regarding the symptoms one may encounter, but to dramatically emphasize the emotional chaos and physical pain victims face in these tormenting situations. In one particular mystery, that transpires in Australia, photographs are integrated into the text, thus amplifying the readers’ sense of being part of the story. To be sure, mystery afi cionados will enjoy the process of solving these conundrums, which pose puzzles that are meant to stimulate the intellect and leave a lasting impression.

After crashing his way to the presidency with the subtlety of a sledgehammer, Donald J. Trump was now faced with tackling the most important job stretched out before him during the next four years: proving he was indeed magnificent. There had to be a way for this great and powerful titan of titans to separate himself from the rest and exhibit how a man's man, a genuine hero, and an off-the-charts genius carried himself. So incorporating the masterful skills he honed as a razor-sharp orator along 2016's brutal Campaign Trail of Fears, he decided he would write letters, and not just any letters. No, these would be positively stuffed with powerful, masterful prose and Jeffersonian in weight. They would be Very Important Letters. Armed with only a nuclear-powered typewriter, the vocabulary of a true giant and a yet unseen command of centuries and centuries of history and perspective, the very important man wrote his very important letters to chronicle his very important, if not very improbable, presidency.

In Toxic Matters, Monica Seger considers two Italian environmental disasters: an isolated factory explosion in Seveso, just north of Milan, in 1976 and the ongoing daily toxic emissions from the Ilva steelworks in the Apulian city of Taranto. Both have exposed residents to high concentrations of the persistent organic pollutant known as dioxin. Although different in terms of geography and temporality, Seveso and Taranto are deeply united by this nearly imperceptible substance, and by the representational complexities it poses. They are also united by creative narrative expressions, in literary, cinematic, and other forms, that push back against dominant contexts and representations perpetuated by state and industrial actors. Seger traces a dialogue between Seveso and Taranto, exploring an interplay between bodies, soil, industrial emissions, and the wealth of dynamic particulate matter that passes in between. At the same time, she emphasizes the crucial function of narrative expression for making sense of this modern-day reality and for shifting existing power dynamics as exposed communities exercise their voices. While Toxic Matters, is grounded in Italian cases and texts, it looks outward to the pressing questions of toxicity, embodiment, and storytelling faced by communities worldwide.

Toxic Histories combines social, scientific, medical and environmental history to demonstrate the critical importance of poison and pollution to colonial governance, scientific authority and public anxiety in India between the 1830s and 1950s. Against the background of India's 'poison culture' and periodic 'poison panics', David Arnold considers why many familiar substances came to be regarded under colonialism as dangerous poisons. As well as the criminal uses of poison, Toxic Histories shows how European and Indian scientists were instrumental in creating a distinctive system of forensic toxicology and medical jurisprudence designed for Indian needs and conditions, and how local, as well as universal, poison knowledge could serve constructive scientific and medical purposes. Arnold reflects on how the 'fear of a poisoned world' spilt over into concerns about contamination and pollution, giving ideas of toxicity a wider social and political significance that has continued into India's postcolonial era.
