Since 1983 with the publication of the B.C. Hospitality/Tourism Manpower andTraining Assessment Study the B.C. government has made a concentrated effort to determineemployer and employee demand for training, to analyse existing trainingprograms in order to establish a coordinated training program for tourismeducation. As part of the consensus building process this paper provides acontext for studying tourism education, considers its challenges and opportunities, goals and principle, development of career paths, programmingrecommendations, the Pacific Rim Institute for Tourism Management, certification procedures. Also provides a summary of training programs byoccupational level and sector and North American universities offeringdegrees in tourism.
