In the 1600s, four Tompkins brothers settled in Virginia. Three of the brothers eventually moved to New York, but the fourth brother, Humphrey Tompkins (d.1679) settled in Virginia. He married Hannah Bennett and they became the parents of nine children. Descendants settled in Virginia, Missouri, Illinois, Oregon and other parts of the United States.
