Time in Africa: Flying and Fun from 1963 to 1983 covers 20 amazing years of David Price’s life as a pilot, working primarily in Africa. Although filled with personal adventures and humorous anecdotes, Time in Africa is much more than an autobiography. It is also an amazing glimpse of a time in aviation before computerized flight controls and when some older planes were still made of plywood and canvas. Having flown planes such as a DC3, Dove, Comet 4, Viscount, B737 and B707, the author shares stories of near disaster, having to make mechanical repairs and adjustments while flying—including once with a fire ax, and landing and taking off in the desert without a runway. Adding further interest to these stories is the setting: Libya, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Cameroon, Zambia, Guinea, and Nigeria in their early days of independence post colonization. A natural storyteller, David portrays what life was like in Africa—both for the privileged Whites and the native Blacks—along with providing insight into the politics and attitudes of the time. From starting an airplane with car batteries strapped to a baggage trolley to having to put out a charcoal fire started in the aisle of a plane to brew a cup of tea, it is clear that there were few dull moments during David’s time as a pilot in Africa. It is also evident that he enjoyed every minute there, as will his readers as he takes them back to an amazing place in an interesting time.

Foundational History of Africa

Where do things stand today in Africa, after some 56 years of independence? Well, the continent is not just a land of crises and hardships; it also has what it takes to become emergent this 21st century – abundant natural resources, a youthful and dynamic population, a great potential for growth, etc. But most wounds inflicted by the colonial and neocolonial systems to date remain unhealed. Africans therefore have three crucial prerequisites to fulfill for their continent’s renaissance: regain their lost cultural balance, put in place a solid economic backbone, and promote a leadership committed to good governance and continental integration. In this illuminating book written from a refreshing African perspective, the author examines the facts and shares his deep conviction – without indulging in angst or finger-pointing– that Africans should build their continent’s emergence on a great sense of patriotism combined with sound preparation and intelligent cooperation, bearing in mind the potent examples set by Nelson Mandela, Thomas Sankara and other world political icons.

This book brings together 42 speeches by Deputy President Thabo Mbeki, most of which were delivered after the elections of April 1994. These speeches reflect the remarkable consistency and logic in Mbeki's thoughts on issues such as socio-economic justice, the alleviation of poverty, the opening up of opportunities, the need for development, and the achievement of reconciliation through transformation - all of which are recurrent themes throughout his speeches. Coupled with Mbeki's vision for South Africa is his devotion to, and identification with the African continent, and his dream of an African renaissance.

Examines the history, politics, and social problems of South Africa and suggests five objectives for U.S. policy toward that nation

Over the past 20 years the global political economy has experienced its most profound shifts since the onset of the industrial revolution. In South Africa and the World, Mills Soko reflects on some of the salient issues that have pervaded public discourse during this time, analysing them within the context of the contemporary South African political economy and of the country's position in the world. Arranged thematically, the essays were all written during a defining period in recent history, a period that has witnessed, among others, the accession of China to the WTO, the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the US, the invention of the iPad, the birth of Facebook, the 2008/9 global financial crisis, Brexit and the global coronavirus pandemic which began at the end of 2019. The turbulent multipolar world demands visionary political and economic leadership, supported by institutions well attuned to contemporary conditions. Such leadership is in short supply. Nor is the existing institutional architecture sufficiently equipped to deal with a complex array of economic, social, environmental, technological and demographic challenges. Mills Soko highlights what has not worked in terms of politics, leadership, foreign policy, the economy, the African development trajectory, corporate ethics, international trade, global governance, and the thread which underlies all these issues – the importance of strong, decisive and accountable leadership. He counters his criticism with what has worked and offers views on how some of the problems that have constrained progress in South Africa and the world can be solved. A central message emerges from his writings: leadership and governance matter, whether in the national or international context. It is a message that permeates all the chapters in the book. And it goes to the heart of what South Africa has gone through over the past two decades and where it is today.
