This book presents the state-of-the-art in infrared thermography (IRT) applications with a focus on moisture assessment in buildings. It also offers practical discussions of several case studies, including comparisons of IRT with other surface temperature measurement techniques. In closing, it demonstrates how IRT can be used to assess capillary absorption, and addresses moisture in walls due to wind-driven rain infiltrations, and the drying process. The book equips readers with a deeper understanding of the ideal conditions for accurate IRT assessment and offers practical recommendations.

This is the first book summarizing the theoretical basics of thermal nondestructive testing (TNDT) by combining elements of heat conduction, infrared thermography, and industrial nondestructive testing. The text contains the physical models of TNDT, heat transfer in defective and sound structures, and thermal properties of materials. Also included are the optimization of TNDT procedures, defect characterization, data processing in TNDT, active and passive TNDT systems, as well as elements of statistical data treatment and decision making. This text contains in-depth descriptions of applications in infrared/thermal testing within aerospace, power production, building, as well as the conservation of artistic monuments The book is intended for the industrial specialists who are involved in technical diagnostics and nondestructive testing. It may also be useful for academic researchers, undergraduate, graduate and PhD university students.

Office building envelopes are generally successful in meeting a range of structural, aesthetic and thermal requirements. However, poor thermal envelope performance will occur when there are discontinuities in the envelope insulation and air barrier systems, such as thermal bridges and air leakage sites. These discontinuities result from designs that do not adequately account for heat, air and moisture transmission, with many thermal defects being associated with inappropriate or inadequate detailing of the connections of envelope components. Despite the existence of these thermal envelope performance problems, information is available to design and construct envelopes that do perform well. In order to close the gap between available knowledge and current practice, the Public Buildings Service of the General Services Administration has entered into an interagency agreement with the Center for Building Technology of the National Institute of Standards and Technology to develop thermal envelope design guidelines for federal office buildings. The goal of this project is to transfer the knowledge on thermal envelope design and performance from the building research, design and construction communities into a form that will be used by building design professionals. This report describes the NIST/GSA envelope design guidelines development at the end of the first year of effort on the project. The effort to this point has consisted of a literature review of research results and technical information on thermal envelope performance and design, an assessment of existing design guidelines as they relate to the thermal envelope, and the development of a format and outline for the design guidelines.

Infrared thermography (IRT) is a non-contact, non-invasive methodology which allows for detection of thermal energy that is radiated from objects in the infrared band of the electromagnetic spectrum, for conversion of such energy into a visible image (such as a surface temperature map). This feature represents a great potential to be exploited in a vast variety of fields from aerospace to civil engineering, to medicine, to agriculture, etc. However, IRT is still not adequately enclosed in industrial instrumentation and there are still potential users who might benefit from the use of such a technique and who are not aware of their existence. This e-book conveys information about basic IRT theory, infrared detectors, signal digitalization and applications of infrared thermography in many fields such as medicine, foodstuff conservation, fluid-dynamics, architecture, anthropology, condition monitoring, non destructive testing and evaluation of materials and structures. The volume promotes an exchange of information between the academic world and industry, and shares methodologies which were independently developed and applied in specific disciplines.

Besides their notable historical and cultural significance, heritage buildings crucially contribute to the economy of those countries that rely heavily on the tourism industry. Investigation and monitoring of the origins of deterioration and damage are therefore key to the preservation of architectural heritage. Diagnosis of Heritage Buildings by Non-Destructive Techniques offers an up-to-date overview of state-of-the-art knowledge by collating specialized studies written by an international group of experts in the field, while also examining the value of these non-intrusive methods through a number of real-life case studies which prove NDT techniques' global relevance. The volume is an invaluable reference resource for students, researchers, and practitioners alike. - Helps readers to easily identify the latest advances in non-destructive testing by subdividing the content into sections specific to each assessment approach - Explores the integration of different NDT methodologies, facilitating the interoperability of traditional and advanced technologies - Presents case studies based on real built heritage to show how to correctly implement the measurement techniques described, and to interpret the results
