Excerpt from The Modern Theory of Solution: Memoirs by Pfeffer, Van't Hoff Arrhenius, and Raoult We find their strict analogues in the osmotic pressures of certain solutions. The laws of gas-pressure apply to the os motie pressures of dilute solutions of substances of the class of cane-sugar - z'. A, those substances whose solutions do not conduct the electric current. AS quickly as we turn to solu tions of the strong acids and bases, and salts, we find that all of them, when dissolved in water, exert an osmotic pressure against the water which is greater than would be calculated from the concentration. Just as the vapor-pressure of ammo nium chloride is abnormally large, so the osmotic pressure of solutions of substances such as those named above is abnor mally large. The gas laws not only apply to the osmotic press ure of solutions, but just as there are exceptions to these laws in gas-pressure, so, also, there are exceptions in osmotic pressure. Excerpt from Theory and Solution of Algebraical Equations of the Higher Orders By far the greater part Of the following work is devoted to the analysis and development of these theories. I have endeavoured to place each of the new methods before the reader in the best form I could; and, by copiously illustrating them all, have afforded him the means of forming a correct estimate of their comparative merits, and of drawing his own conclusions, as to the preference to be given to any one in particular, in cases of more than ordinary difficulty. Excerpt from A Treatise on the Theory of Solution: Including the Phenomena of Electrolysis His book was at first intended as the second edition of a small volume on Solution and Electrolysis published in the year 1895. It was, however, soon found necessary to rewrite such large portions of the text, and to incorporate so much fresh matter, that the result is in effect a new work.
