This collection of articles is devoted to the relationship between text and performance in contemporary theatre. In this volume, nineteen theatre and drama researchers from the Baltic countries, Sweden, Finland, Ireland, Hungary, Russia and China discuss the results of their research into these issues in academic articles and essays. The book mainly focuses on the experience of the Baltics in the creation of theatrical texts, but it also provides a wider insight into the changing processes of world drama and theatre. Three sections of the volume provide numerous examples of the functionality of traditional texts in today’s theatre, as well as introducing the reader to new names in contemporary drama and the different models of practice in theatre companies. This book, with its rich collection of material and detailed analysis of different methods and experiences of contemporary theatre, is recommended for both theatre and drama theoreticians and practitioners.

English drama at the beginning of the sixteenth century was allegorical, didactic and moralistic; but by the end of the century theatre was censured as emotional and even immoral. How could such a change occur? Kent Cartwright suggests that some theories of early Renaissance theatre - particularly the theory that Elizabethan plays are best seen in the tradition of morality drama - need to be reconsidered. He proposes instead that humanist drama of the sixteenth century is theatrically exciting - rather than literary, elitist and dull as it has often been seen - and socially significant, and he attempts to integrate popular and humanist values rather than setting them against each other. Taking as examples the plays of Marlowe, Heywood, Lyly and Greene, as well as many by lesser-known dramatists, the book demonstrates the contribution of humanist drama to the theatrical vitality of the sixteenth century.

Directors have long been the main figures on Eastern European stages. During the last three decades some of the most outstanding among them have risen to international stardom thanks to their ground-breaking productions that speak to audiences far beyond local borders. Not by chance, a considerable number of these directors have won the second-biggest theatre award on the continent – the European Prize for (New) Theatrical Realities. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the top directors of the region have been pushing contemporary theatre as a whole ahead into new territories. This book offers informative and in-depth portraits of twenty of these directors, written by leading critics, scholars, and researchers, who shed light on the directors’ signature styles with examples of their emblematic productions and outline the reasons for their impact. In addition, in two chapters the selected directors themselves discuss their artistic family trees as well as the main stakes theatre faces today. The book will be of interest to theatre scholars, students, and anybody engaged with theatre on a global scale.

As violence escalates around the world, its victims and perpetrators struggle to develop comprehensible narratives to present truthful accounts of history and experience. This special issue of Theater--a collection of theater artists' responses to contemporary events--examines the human psyche and its capacity for violence and explores theater's possibilities for political dissent. In Theater and Violence, through interviews, play excerpts, and full-length plays--including the first American publication of two major German playwrights and directors--theater artists offer their own narratives for humankind's violent psychologies. One full-length play, Falk Richter's Seven Seconds (In God We Trust), probes the mind of an American pilot moments before he releases a bomb on a city below. Another, René Pollesch's 24 Hours Are Not a Day, humorously explores the ironies and pathologies of globalization after September 11. The issue also includes a commentary on the National Endowment for the Arts' Shakespeare presentations for the U.S. military; interviews with Russian theater artists on the first anniversary of the Chechen rebels' siege of a Moscow theater; and Jonathan Kalb's powerful adaptation of Heiner Müller's Mauser, set in Tikrit.
