**** BCL3 cites other editions of parts of the complete works here in progress (Volumes 21 to 29 are due for release in Sept. 1989). This group of ten volumes contains: A monograph of the sub-class Cirripedia (still an essntial reference to cirripedists), 3v.; Monographs of the fossil Lepadidae, 1v.; On the origin of species, 1859, and 1876 (the 6th ed. with omission of the initial "On"), one volume each; The various contrivances by which orchids are fertilized by insects, 1v.; Movements and habits of climbing plants, 1v.; and Variation of animals and plants under domestication, 2v. This noble undertaking will make available many titles that have been OP for decades. The importance of Darwin to the history of thought--in science, society, religion, philosophy--needs no elaboration. His place in 19th c. literature is demonstrated by Gaustreg's remarks upon the frequent reprinting, translations, and continual revisions of certain titles during Darwin's life. The first ten volumes were annotated in RandR, April 1988. The chief failing of this splendid set is in the poor quality of the reproduction of most illustrations (a minor part of volumes 11-20).
