Foreword by Minette Shepard The enchanting story of some of the most beloved characters in English children’s literature—Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends from the Hundred Acre Wood, Piglet, Eeyore, Tigger, Kanga, Roo, Christopher Robin, and more—and the remarkable partnership between a writer and an illustrator that brought them to life, told for the first time in this beautiful volume illustrated with more than 125 full-color images from the Pooh series, never-before-seen sketches, artwork, family photographs, and memorabilia. Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends have enthralled generations of children and have become some of the world’s most beloved characters. But before their adventures were captured in many millions of books published in nearly fifty languages, they started life in the 1920s as the product of a unique collaboration between author A. A. Milne and illustrator E. H. Shepard. They wove images and text together in a way that was utterly original for the time. It was a process that Shepard relished; he continued to create artwork for new editions until his death in 1976 at the age of ninety-six. This lovingly designed, full-color volume, which includes a foreword from Shepard’s granddaughter, tells the story behind this remarkable partnership, and traces the evolution of Shepard’s work, from his first tentative sketches to the illustrations we know and love, including the characters’ later incarnations by the artists at Walt Disney Studios. A stunning and rare collection, filled with some never-before-published sketches and the first illustration of Pooh, The Art of Winnie-the-Pooh is a treasure trove of early art and an exclusive behind-the-scenes peek at the creation of Pooh bear and Hundred Acre Wood—direct from the artist’s estate—that is sure to become a cherished keepsake for devoted fans and readers who grew up with these timeless characters.

Ernest Howard Shepard was born in London in 1879 into an artistic and literary family. He studied art from an early age and was successful in making a career out of it, particularly as a political cartoonist for Punch and a prolific book illustrator. Shepard is most widely known for his illustrations of the Winnie-the-Pooh series by A. A. Milne and The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, and these drawings have become classics in their own right, iconic in the minds of children and adults everywhere. Shepard's War is an intimate, illustrated narrative of the First World War seen through the mainly unpublished work of E. H. Shepard, who served as a frontline officer from 1915 to the end of the war. With over a hundred pieces of original artwork, rendered in full-colour, ranging from caricatures of Shepard's fellow officers to sketches made during battle, technical drawings and commentary from Shepard's own wartime notebooks and diaries, this is a unique insight into the life of an incredibly talented yet humble man and a rare visual journey into the Great War.

For one brief hour on a sunny Texas morning, amateur baker Rosie Hart glimpses the life she’s always dreamed about—thanks to a surprise inheritance from the late Miss Alice. But her benefactor is barely cold in the ground when Rosie is accused of her murder. As the only stranger in the tight-knit Airlie Falls community, and the only person with an obvious motive, all eyes turn to Rosie. Especially when more bodies begin to pile up and mysterious letters from the grave start circulating faster than Rosie can pull a tray of cherry nut clusters out of the oven. When Rosie begins to suspect the murders have links to a sixty-year-old suspicious death on the very property she’s just inherited, town locals become uneasy. But how can Rosie prove the two are related—and prove her innocence—before the killer strikes again?

Is there a physics of society? Ranging from Hobbes and Adam Smith to modern work on traffic flow and market trading, and across economics, sociology and psychology, this study shows how much we can understand of human behaviour when we cease to try to predict and analyse the behaviour of individuals and look to the impact of hundreds, thousands or millions of individual human decisions. The book encourages us to examine our own behaviour, whether in buying the new Harry Potter book, voting for a particular party or responding to the lures of advertisers.
