In the fall of 2013 and the summer of 2014, graduate students from East Carolina University's Program in Maritime Students, in collaboration with the UNC-Coastal Studies Institute, carried out a project recording six watercraft from a collection of historical small watercraft collected and maintained by the Whalehead Preservation Trust in Currituck County, North Carolina. This volume contains six chapters that serve as the technical reports concerning these six vessels. Each chapter reports the process of recording the boats and their histories and also engages in interpretation and analysis of the form, function, and methods of construction. This publication intends to communicate the results of maritime-focused historic preservation activities concerning a small part of Currituck County's legacy of boat-building

Murder at Whalehead is the ultimate beach read. On the northern Outer Banks looms an old hunting lodge known as the Whalehead Club. During the roaring twenties Edward and Marie Knight entertained guests at this isolated Mansion by the Sea. Now it has become one of North Carolina's most popular tourist attractions. Less than a quarter mile away deep in the marsh along the Currituck Sound lies the body of a young woman. Someone has killed and craves to kill again. In his new novel, Murder at Whalehead, Joe C. Ellis tells the story of two Ohio families vacationing on the Outer Banks. They look forward to sun, sea, rest, and relaxation. Instead, they cross paths with a homicidal maniac. Can they stop him before another innocent victim dies? Murder at Whalehead will absorb the reader from its first tantalizing page to its last satisfying conclusion. Before sleek factory boats dominated Currituck Sound, locals piloted these waters in hulls made by hand. Some still can be seen today--beautiful works of art designed for the utility of travel, fishing, hunting, scouting and touring. They figure prominently in recollections of a bygone sportsman's paradise, and native storyteller Travis Morris offers this engaging collection based on anecdotes, interviews and detailed craft descriptions. It's an insider's history of Currituck's boating heritage featuring the famed Whalehead Club, an accidental run-in with the Environmental Protection Agency and a harrowing U.S. Coast Guard rescue.

Painfully remote in the time of the Wright brothers, today the Outer Banks famously welcomes millions of visitors each year. The journey from early isolation to popularity is recalled with remarkable insight by Ernie Bowden, a sixth-generation Outer Banker. On any given day, Ernie was a sailor, cattle baron, salvage specialist, hunter, fisherman, legal expert and elected official all at once. Born just after the end of World War I, his memories stretch from the isolation of the early twentieth century through the glamor of the world-famous duck clubs of the area and the storms that have shaped its modern-day geography. Aided by author Clark Twiddy, Ernie tells the tales of a unique life spent in this unique place.
